Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Iana Sultanova Tashkunas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Iana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I have always been drawn to my profession, but I was very worried about whether I would succeed or not. I believe that if you love your job, then everything will definitely work out. And only a favorite job can truly bring money and pleasure. When a person develops in his business and sets goals for himself, everything works out. To begin with, I realized for myself that I wanted to work in the beauty industry, then there were trainings, my first job, and career growth. So my work helps me earn money from anywhere in the world, and live in different countries.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a child, I often spent time in beauty salons because my mom worked there, and I knew that when I grew up I would want to be involved in the beauty industry too. I studied a lot in this sphere and even had time to try myself in different directions to understand what exactly suits me. Having chosen a creative profession – makeup artist, I realized how many opportunities this job will give me. And would not also have any limitations in my growth as a professional. I started working in large cosmetic corporations such as LVMH and Estee Launder. That’s how I became a high-class specialist, not only as a makeup artist but also as a manager. I worked a lot of shows, for cosmetic chains such as Golden Apple and Sephora, for brands, celebrities, movies, and others. I started my own business and wrote a book thanks to my profession, so my childhood dreams came true. I started my journey in Russia (Moscow), then moved on a talent visa as a makeup artist extraordinaire, and now I work in the USA.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a beauty master: above all, I help people to see and understand themselves better. I feel responsible to my clients and colleagues.
Most of all, I am grateful to my profession for unlimited opportunities not only in financial but also in career growth.
The realization that I can develop anywhere in the world, develop as a professional, lights up my heart. And when I see the results of my work and happy clients, it is exactly that the most rewarding
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The main lesson I learned during my training was that you should learn from those who, in your opinion, do their job perfectly. Choose a model of business and life that suits you best. Trendy does not mean suitable for you, listen to yourself and go for your dreams, not chase other people’s. I think business should be (for love) otherwise it will not work out. At the same time, you need to realize that if you do not go into the process of things that you may think are not in your area of responsibility process can go more difficult. Nowadays it is very important to understand how social media, marketing, how to work with the team, contractors, and clients work. The competition is always big and you need to stand out and improve. That’s why I think it’s important to be trained not only in your field, but also to improve in business in general, and also to start with yourself, I mean to realize and accept your authenticity and philosophy that you plan to bring to the masses through your business.
