We recently connected with Ian Legge and have shared our conversation below.
Ian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
The Punk Cellist is a unique business because it fills a niche that was previously untapped. Aside from the traditional classical cello pieces that are familiar to most, clients can also choose from a curated playlist of alternative music arranged on cello for their events or weddings.
Having instrumental string arrangements at weddings and events works well because the performance is high energy, but sits well in the background of conversation and never overpowers the atmosphere.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Ian, I’ve studied cello for 22 years. I also played drums in a punk band for over a decade. During the pandemic, i combined my love of cello and punk to create The Punk Cellist. I have arranged over 50 cello covers or punk, rock, alternative, and other musical styles.
As my popularity grew, I began receiving client requests to perform at weddings. I have now performed at over 25 weddings over the past two years and continue to book events on a regular basis.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Consistency is key. Posting on a regular basis can help you continuously reach a new audience. Posting content that is “shareable” or worth sharing is another big factor in growth. If you can create something that others will share to their followers, growth is inevitable.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Posting “high quality” content doesn’t matter as much as the quality of your work. The fancy camera angles and focus pulls don’t mean anything if you don’t have a good product.
