Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ian Day. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes I have been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work. Absolutely, I believe that your gift will make room for you. In highschool I fell in love with art in every form. I was able to pursue that into college and had the opportunity a couple years into my education to further my interests in art through tattooing. I remember walking into the tattoo shop that I apprenticed at and I was just there to get a tattoo for myself. I was overwhelmed with a sense of ease and comfort like I was at home in this place and I had never been there before in my life. Every bit of the shop was so interesting to me. I had to know more. So I asked so many questions that day and one of those questions was if I could show the gentleman my artwork. They were kind enough to allow me to do so and it was like it was ment to be. That day my whole life changed it was the start of my journey as a tattooer.
Ian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Ian Day I am from a small town in centerville, Indiana. I grew up there until I was 18 years old then moved out to Arizona. I went through a professional apprenticeship in 2012 at a local tattoo shop and have been tattooing ever since my career has really taken off in the last 4 year. I suffered from the disease of alcoholism until 2018 and have been sober since then. Finally getting to take my professional career as a tattooer seriously. I have been tattooing full time in Glendale Arizona at Steadfast tattoo company for a little over 2 years now and have made a tremendous amount of breakthroughs in my art throughout the last couple years. Getting to participate in tattoo expos out of state and winning awards for my artwork. I am so grateful for everyone that has been there for me through the hard times and the new friends I have now that have taught me so much. Without them and direction from my God I wouldn’t have the life I have now.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One Goal I have for 2023 is to open up my own tattoo shop. That way I can offer a safe environment for my friends in recovery to come get tattooed away from anything that might trigger them or may be harmful or unhealthy in the industry. As well as a place for anyone that works at my shop to grow their artwork as well as their soul.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist especially a tattoo artist is getting to watch them look in the mirror after we finish. Knowing that they will get to cherish the artwork for a lifetime.
