We recently connected with Ian Amor and have shared our conversation below.
Ian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The 2020 covid lockdown had just gone into effect when a friend of mine introduced me to the idea of setting up my own business. Between the two of us for the better part of the lockdown, we went back and forth on structures, plans, long-term goals, problems we’ll face, etc.
He gave me a great starting point for setting up how I wanted to run my business. I say ‘my business’ as he got other opportunities after the lockdown that he is pursuing. Before that though I got connected with his mentors who eventually became business partners of my own. Through them, I was able to grow the idea further into something I can actually launch and begin to share with the world.

Ian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The service my business offers is an educational service through direct engagement. It’s not classroom-based, it is all online, the information is readily available, and there’s a large network of people to connect with and fully dive into to get oneself set up and on how they want to run their own business.
This education is geared specifically towards building people into better business people. People with the knowledge and courage to take the chances needed to build themselves, their lives, and the lives of those around them, into whatever state they dream about.
Even if they don’t get to where they are wanting through the service and decide to pursue other options, then I hope that they can at least take what they have learned about the business world, networking, etc., and use that to keep themselves safe from the risks life could throw at them.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I have learned, or rather inadvertently had beaten into me at a young age, is that life has a ‘standard’ or a socially acceptable path.
You grow up, grade school, high school, go to college, get a good degree, land a stable job, and coast through the rest of your life into retirement, effectively working 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. Maybe marry your high school or college sweetheart. Have a family and help them go through the same path as you took.
My life went off that ‘standard’ a long time ago and I’m still slowly breaking it down and moving to do what I want to do. Life is about living and enjoying your time in it. Being locked to some social standard, some career job you hate, or a failed marriage, isn’t healthy for anyone or anything.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Several times I’ve had to pivot. Coming out of high school, going into and coming out of college, my attempts at a military career, even now with the best career job I’ve ever had I still have to pivot.
I live with General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and as a result, some things are a larger mental hurdle for me to get through. Particularly with those I see in a higher position than I am. Parents, teachers, bosses, etc., all have (knowingly or not) been some of the biggest mental hurdles I’ve had to deal with. Mainly because so many (especially when I was young) didn’t understand mental illness. Certainly not like we do today.
So while a ‘normal’ person can push on through, for me, I’ve had to side-step, jump, dodge, and do the things to be mentally sound while other people aren’t as affected by it as I am. And I still do. It’s a condition that’s never really going to go away. All I can do is know my triggers and work to know the steps I need to make to get to the next one.
