Shanny, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?

When I first began singing I was around age 8. I remember feeling as if nothing in the world could compare to what I felt each time I had the honor to hold the mic, to sing, to write a song, or to perform. As the years passed, I joined my step uncle’s church choir and started performing in talent shows at age 11. As I got older, my aunt still would not allow me to pursue my artistry on a professional level. By the time I turned 16 she came to me and asked again ‘Is singing what you want to do with your life’, again my response was ‘yes’. At 16 I took the step to actually begin conversations with a label owner and of course things STILL did not work out the way I had hoped. Years later, today, I am still actively pursuing the dream of the 8 year old me. Still, nothing compares to holding the mic, to singing, to writing that new track, and to performing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello everyone, I am Shanny, soul singer and songwriter. I came here to Atlanta to be a part of the artistry community. I have been in love with music, with the process of creating, and sharing it with the world since I could understand the power in it. I write and create for ALL genres. Specifically, soul, country, gospel, hip hop/rap and alternative. My creations are my life, they are small bits of my soul that I share with the world in hopes that the world loves them just as much as I. In this journey I am most proud of my resilience because I remember showing up to open mics, auditions, etc. terrified, full of nerves, rejection and still I kept pressing forward. I know ALL artists can relate to the same things I have experienced. PLEASE KEEP GOING! I hope that every person who reads this understands that those no’s, those rejections are just small tests. Please keep going. You just have to believe in yourself. If you keep pushing, keep showing up, and keep putting yourself out there, you will succeed.

I am a performer at a few festivals and events as we close out the 2022 calendar year. However, I am still available for bookings as we close out 2022 and enter 2023.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

I started building up my social presence online back in 2019. It was a journey because I am an individual who does not enjoy or particularly like social media. I had to learn the power of it over time. My advice to others is to be consistent in posting your content and be particular about the social platforms you share your gifts with. Any time you go out to perform, find some spots, take photos, grab clips of your performance, and put together a collage. (I say ALL of that as I have failed to do it myself over the years. However, I have watched the success of others through the same process. So, it works.) My advice to those starting out, DO NOT get caught up in the numbers. I know that we live in a world where it seems that success is based on ‘the numbers’ , I am here to tell you, it is not the determining factor of your success or talent. No matter what the numbers say, believe in yourself and do not ever stop!

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?

Yes ! I have been reading and in-taking all of the information from ‘Everything you’d better know about the music industry’ by Kashif. It is a must read!
