We were lucky to catch up with Iah Bearden-Vrai recently and have shared our conversation below.
Iah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Perseverance, drive, ambition, positive attitude. There are individuals that will get into these professions and won’t have as many challenges/issues/obstacles. They are going to get there faster but remind yourself there is an opposite side of the spectrum of that as well. Do not compare yourself to anyone, accept that everyone has their own journey. Be happy for the ride and continue to work on being better every day at what you love so much. Hard work will pay off in the end.

Iah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into filmmaking/photography initially from the desire to create strong storytelling. I’m an avid A24 fan and the majority of their films move me to make powerful pieces and challenge myself to be better every time. Motion; films, skits, documentaries, web series, etc… Photo; anything that needs to be captured. Currently, I’m most proud of my dramatic narrative short film that almost got into SXSW. I wrote, directed, produced, edited, colored, and starred in this film that took a monumental effort from inception to finalize and I’m grateful for the entire experience and team that helped me create it. I’m set apart from other filmmakers and photographers because I come from acting and singing professionally first. I have a BFA in Musical Theatre as well as an MFA in Cinema Production (Screenwriting + Directing). While in grad school I got a job at the rental house and had them teach me like I was a child, completely oblivious to everything. From there, I started working on set as an electric and grip every single weekend. The knowledge grew and expanded and I continue to learn every single day. I want people to know that I offer a wide range of options within motion and photo so they can utilize different aspects when needing to provide for their business.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal is to be solely working my film/photo business full-time so I’m not still managing at the rental house. As great as the house has been to me, you are always wanting your own personal to thrive and create those bigger opportunities of finance and stability.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Freedom of Expression. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to tell your story. What motivates you and moves you to tears of happiness or pain. Showcasing that in the most honest light is so empowering and vulnerable. What more could you want?
