We caught up with the brilliant and insightful HYBYCOZO LIGHT AND SCULPTURE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, HYBYCOZO thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
For HYBYCOZO, the importance of math and art education lies at the very core of their artistic vision and mission. They believe that the fusion of mathematics and art not only creates visually captivating installations but also serves as a powerful tool to inspire curiosity and learning. By incorporating mathematical principles into their creations, HYBYCOZO aims to break down the barriers between these seemingly distinct disciplines and showcase their inherent interconnectedness. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic value of their work but also fosters a deeper appreciation for both mathematics and art among their audiences. Furthermore, by promoting math and art education through their website and various initiatives, HYBYCOZO strives to make these subjects more accessible and engaging for individuals of all backgrounds, encouraging a broader understanding of their profound impact on our world. Ultimately, HYBYCOZO’s commitment to math and art education reflects their belief in the transformative power of creativity and intellectual exploration, driving them to inspire and uplift communities through their exceptional artistic endeavors.

HYBYCOZO, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
HYBYCOZO was brought to life by the artistic vision and collaboration of Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk. The duo met in 2008 and discovered a shared passion for blending mathematics and art to create captivating sculptures and installations. Inspired by the concept of constructing geometric shapes to form stunning artworks, they embarked on a journey to explore the intersection of mathematics, science, and artistic expression. Drawing from their backgrounds in design, engineering, and architecture, Serge and Yelena began experimenting with various materials and techniques to bring their ideas to life. Their dedication and innovative approach led to the birth of HYBYCOZO in 2014, short for “Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone.” With their unique creations, they sought to break down the barriers between math and art, encouraging people to appreciate the beauty and elegance of both disciplines

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Supporting more public art, artists, and creating a creative economy requires a multifaceted approach involving both public and private support for the creative process. With the coming age of AI, we believe that universal basic income will become an essential tool for social equity and building a more just society as well as supporting a variety of people to become part of the creative ecosystem.
Public Funding: Governments can allocate funds specifically for public art projects and grants to support local artists. Establishing public art programs and initiatives can ensure that communities have access to culturally enriching installations and exhibitions.
Tax Incentives: Implement tax incentives for businesses and individuals who invest in public art or support local artists. This can encourage private sponsorship and philanthropy in the arts.
Collaborations: Foster partnerships between artists, businesses, and community organizations. By collaborating with artists, businesses can enhance their spaces and contribute to the artistic landscape while artists gain exposure and financial support.
Art Education: Strengthen art education in schools and communities to nurture creativity and talent from an early age. Offering arts programs can empower aspiring artists and cultivate a future generation of art enthusiasts.
Affordable Studio Spaces: Provide affordable studio spaces and workshops for artists, particularly in urban areas where real estate costs can be prohibitive. This can foster a sense of community among artists and allow them to focus on their craft.
Public Engagement: Encourage public engagement with art through events, workshops, and festivals. This can create a vibrant cultural scene that attracts visitors, stimulates local economies, and supports artists financials
By implementing these strategies, society can create a conducive environment for artists to thrive, promote the appreciation of art among the public, and build a robust creative economy that contributes to social, cultural, and economic development.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There is only one right way to create art”: Unlearning the notion that there is a singular “right” way to create art can free us from self-doubt and comparison. Embracing diverse styles and techniques enables us to find our unique voice and artistic identity. “Art should only be for self-expression”: While art can certainly be a means of self-expression, it doesn’t have to be limited to that purpose. Artists can also explore storytelling, social commentary, and various other themes to engage with broader audiences and make an impact. Art should be inclusive and accessible to all. Unlearning the notion that art is only for a specific group of people can help artists reach a broader audience and create work that resonates with diverse communities.
