Hunter, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?

I learned how to sew clothing back when I was in high school. When I received my first sewing machine I was clueless and very uneducated in sewing. I spent numerous hours watching Youtube tutorials and experimenting on my machine to learn how to sew properly. I would go to the thrift store and purchase second-hand fabric to learn and develop my sewing skills. My Instagram account also allowed me to connect with other designers. I have been fortunate enough to meet many great people on social media that I have helped me expand my sewing knowledge. To speed up my learning process of sewing, I would have reached out to other designers sooner. At first, when I connected with other designers on social media, I was hesitant to reach out to them. Looking back on it, I would have reached out sooner to these people to ask for help during my learning process.
One key skill that is essential to sewing is persistence. Sewing is very hard to learn and takes hours of hands-on work to learn. Persistence allows you to not give up when the process becomes tough. When I learn how to sew a new piece of clothing it requires numerous attempts and alterations to complete the piece.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello, my name is Hunter Yee. I started and currently run a clothing brand called Connektions. Connektions began as an Instagram account where I display my sewing and design. After learning and developing my sewing, I started selling my custom creations through my Instagram account (@connektions_) and my website (connektions.art). Connektions specializes in hand-cut and sewn clothing made from custom materials. Customers can place custom orders with Connektions, allowing the customer to choose any design they want. Connektions utilizes unique woven material to create high-quality and comfortable clothing pieces. Apart from custom orders, I release collections of clothing which include hoodies, bags, shorts, and other clothing pieces on my website for sale.
Occasionally, I attend events and swap meets around Southern California where I sell my clothing. At these events, I’m able to meet new people and develop new customer relationships. These events are very fun because they bring together the clothing community and I enjoy displaying my unique clothing to new people.
What I’m most proud of with Connektions is how unique the clothing I make is. When my customers receive their Connektions piece they are impressed with the quality and how unique the piece is. Being able to make my customer a one of one clothing piece that they can’t find anywhere else is a very satisfying feeling. I also love being able to turn my customer’s ideas into reality. Custom orders allow me to work with the customer and develop a design that replicates exactly what the customer was thinking.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is bringing ideas into reality. The concept of taking an idea and bringing it to life is the most rewarding aspect of my clothing. I enjoy working with customers and creating clothing pieces that bring their ideas to life. Bringing concepts to life is rewarding because it gives the creative freedom to create anything without boundaries.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?

I believe the best way to support artists, creatives, and the creative ecosystem is by sharing the creatives’ website or social media with your network of friends. People can repost or share on their stories to support the creative. I believe this sharing on social media is the best way to show your support for the artist or creative.
