Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hunter Page. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hunter , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I’m extremely grateful to be making a full-time living doing what I love. This is my second full year of being financially self-sufficient through photography, but it wasn’t like this from day one. In the first few years, I took on various jobs to make ends meet—digging trenches, installing irrigation systems, laying rock, pulling weeds, and splitting wood—often in extreme heat or freezing conditions.
Over time, I was able to transition fully into photography and instruction. I quite literally work around the clock to make this happen. When I’m not in the field leading daily photo tours or multi-day workshops, I’m at my computer refining my website, marketing, and working to connect with new clients.
A major turning point was running my first four-day workshop in 2023. The location was remote, so I hired a friend to handle meals, and we stayed in off-grid cabins surrounded by golden aspens, lakes, and mountains. That experience showed me I was capable of more than I had given myself credit for.
Since then, I’ve operated seven workshops and will run five more this year. Looking back, I do not really know if I could have sped this up. I specifically wanted to wait and become a more well-rounded person and photographer. When I pulled the trigger to make this happen, I worked day in and day out learning at every step of the way. This takes time no matter which way you look at it.
Hunter , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Hunter Page, a professional landscape photographer and instructor specializing in educational photography tours and immersive multi-day workshops. I operate a photography business offering daily guided tours in and around Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon National Parks in southern Utah. This business is called Capitol Reef Photography Tours
For the past 12 years, I have dedicated my life to photography, prioritizing the quality of my work above all else. My approach has been both artistic and analytical—dissecting what makes a compelling image while continuously refining my craft. Before transitioning to full-time photography, I worked as a wilderness backpacking guide in Montana’s rugged backcountry. This experience was intentional, helping me develop the communication, leadership, and guiding skills necessary to become an effective instructor.
Every step of my journey has been with a singular focus: to become a full-time photography educator. I committed time to learning, growing, and developing both as an artist and as a guide, ensuring I could provide the highest level of instruction and experience for my clients.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Corporations have taken the throne in just about every aspect of life. This undercuts small businesses; print makers, painters, mom and pop shops, etc. My advice is to research the company who you make a purchase from and purchase from small businesses that are making great product in their craft.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
or me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is teaching—guiding others toward those moments of realization when everything clicks. Since I was young, I’ve naturally gravitated toward sharing what I know, pausing my own pursuits to help someone else understand a skill.
Photography, like any creative pursuit, is a slow evolution—one that requires patience, curiosity, and persistence. There’s something deeply fulfilling about witnessing an aspiring photographer make that breakthrough, where scattered ideas and unanswered questions suddenly align. Creativity isn’t just about technical mastery; it’s about seeing differently, interpreting the world in a personal way. Helping others unlock that ability—to translate vision into something tangible and meaningful—is what makes this journey so worthwhile.
