Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hunter Pack. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hunter, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Growing up in the industry as a child in the early two thousands, I watched and experienced firsthand the effect that social media and the popularity of short-form content had on how media was produced. There seemed from my perspective to be a movement away from traditional approaches to film and television as more and more of the creative process was focused on expediency and less on quality. The use of practical effects and emphasis on creativity and quality seemed to decrease and was instead replaced with a focus on getting a product out quicker, even if that meant putting out a product that may not have been as good as it could have been in order to profit from a trend within current media. This transition also impacted who was getting cast or given opportunities within the industry as having a social media presence and a following seemed to have an impact on who was given opportunities to succeed. When starting Spotlight Productions we wanted to work directly counter to these new practices, in favor of a philosophy that was taught to me by my broadcasting mentor Tommy Smeltzer, “do simple well”. While seemingly an axiomatic concept, this idea of “do[ing] simple well” did not simply mean to do the bare minimum, but rather to do the maximum with what we had. He encouraged us to use the resources we had, to take our time to learn, and to strive to become experts in fundamental skills in order to get the most out of ourselves and to take pride in creating something at the highest level. I have taken this concept and expanded it within Spotlight’s business model, focusing on making personalized content that my clients like and not simply content that might perform well on social media, taking the time to make sure that it is good in quality and not simply a part of a trend. While the industry standard currently seems to focus on making quick money and producing trending and flashy content, we focus on producing high-quality products that our clients love.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi my name is Hunter Pack, I am 23 years old, and I am the owner and executive producer of Spotlight Productions. I grew up in Los Angeles, California, and currently live in Fort Worth, Texas. I grew up a part of the film and television industry as a child actor and model in California from 2002 through 2015 and founded Spotlight Productions in 2021 during COVID-19 with the goal of helping to connect people across the world so that they may celebrate once in a lifetime experiences that couldn’t be put on hold. We are a multi-media production company specializing in photo, video, and broadcast production that focuses on working with small businesses, artists, and families to provide affordable and high-quality content that they can be proud to share with the world. We provide services to people who might think that they can not afford professional media, or who would otherwise be unable to share their art, products, services, or events effectively. I am most proud that we remain focused on providing personalized service to each of our clients, working with them to create exactly the kind of content they have always dreamed of.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Starting this company was never a part of my initial plan in life. Both my business partner Connor Morse and I have full-time jobs and goals outside of our company with Connor graduating from Arizona State University in 2023 with a degree in Manufacturing Engineering and I with a major in Combined Science and a Minor in Child Development while applying to medical school which we both utilize in full-time jobs alongside operating Spotlight Productions. In 2021, the peak of the Covid-19 global pandemic, a time when the world was staying in quarantine and the world felt as if it was placed on hold, Connor and I found that there was a need for a way in which people could affordably stay connected to each other when being together physically was not an option. Taking my experiences in the industry, and a shared commitment to produce high-quality and accessible services, we started Spotlight Productions in July of that year, live-streaming special events so that families who could not be together physically could feel connected in moments that could not be put on hold. Since the founding of Spotlight, we have continued this mission and expanded to provide not only broadcasting but also photo/ video production not only in our original state of California, but in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Texas. We have been a part of music video productions, have worked as media for content creators and professional athletes, provided product photography and social media advertisements for small businesses, and have begun entering into the social media management space in order to help promote artists and small brands.

How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my business partner Connor Morse in our freshman year of high school in 2015 in our shared freshman biology class. Immediately bonding, we found that we also worked together as a part of the technical crew of our school’s theatre department as well. It was in our junior year of high school, that Connor approached me with the idea of starting a broadcasting program at our school in which we would live broadcast school sporting events such as football and baseball games, as well as provide live broadcasts for the school events such as graduation throughout the year. We began this program under our mentor Tommy Smeltzer, and this program continues to this day at our alma mater. In 2021 during COVID we were brought back to broadcast as independent contractors the now virtual events at our school, and decided that we would officially start our own company in July of that year. Since then, though having gone to separate colleges in different states, we have continued our business, and have grown it to operate in five states, with several independent contractors we hire out to, as well as travel ourselves while maintaining full-time jobs outside of our business.
