We were lucky to catch up with Hunter Manz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hunter, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I was born in Las Vegas where, at a young age, I was exposed to water scarcity in my community. After watching a documentary on the global water crisis, I realized my community wasn’t the only one suffering and I saw little promise of a solution. From age 14, I have pursued one goal: to end water scarcity and prevent its spread to more than half of the world by 2050.
Hunter, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Hunter Manz, I’m 24 years old and have been working to help solve world water scarcity since I was 14. I developed the Reverse Osmosis Centrifuge which is a system that can be placed in desalination plants to help render them environmentally friendly and economically viable for all. Our system can improve fresh water output from 30-50% to 70-88%. It can also eliminate waste-streams associated with desalination. Lastly, it may soon allow desalination plants to brine mine which is the harvesting of salt and other minerals (Lithium, Magnesium, etc) from seawater. By giving desalination plants the ability to brine mine, we could potentially make desalination free since the extra money coming from the brine could pay for the plants production of freshwater. I want people to know that there are folks working to solve the world’s water needs in an environmentally friendly way. We are looking for supporters of the company.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Our company has had to face many problems that have nearly killed the business from engineering to finance. I have spent many nights thinking there was no light at the end of the tunnel. Luckily, persistence and time can provide the answers, capital, and ability to solve any problem you may face. We are in a great place now!
Any advice for managing a team?
It’s important to lead from the front, and work harder than those you are managing. By doing so, you become the most valuable team member, dependable and caring colleague, and guiding compass of morale for those you manage. I know its corny, but think of Alexander the Great and how he suffered alongside his troops, even when he didn’t need to.
