We were lucky to catch up with Hunter (Huntorprey) Turner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hunter (Huntorprey), appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I have worked on to date would be my 3rd project Hy-definition. It was a project that I really wanted to test myself as a writer as well as add all of my musical influences.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I had been writing since an early age. My mother introduced me to the open mic seen in Toledo in 7th grade. I started from there. I didn’t becomed serious until later on during my college years at University of Cincinnati. During that time I met my music friends became business partners, created DefinitionMusic LLC, and was in the independent hiphop and poetry scenes there. From there I was able to travel regionally and across the country. I was able to create my own style using influences I grew up on; Hiphop, industrial, 80s, The writings of Edgar Allen Poe and Ralph Ellison. As well as The Last Poets. So there is this political, dark, poetic, urban, theatrical, nerdy thing happening lol.
With that I was able to do some really cool things in both the music and poetry. In music (so far) I was able to put out 3 distinctly different projects: Motion Sound Picture, Running Man, and Hy-definition, with a song, (Close Encounters) going viral globally. In poetry I was able to do things for my community. I was commissioned to wrote for the Great Lakes Fresh Water Initiative as well as write and perform the openings for our local baseball and hockey teams the Toledo Mudhens and Walleye.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think that society is in a very interesting place. There are so many avenues for artists to be seen, so many social media apps and sites. So there is a lot you can do. But art has also felt really disposable in this climate. Because it’s geared towards content and personality and less on the artist work. So the idea to stay relevant is to make content. Never having those moments to step back, grow, and put out something that took time and nuance to make. So I think society can best help by remembering that the art is more than the content. Art is more than escapism. It’s a snapshot os the current zeitgeist.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is best described by this quote: “An artist duty far as I am concerned, is to reflect the times.”- Nina Simone. I just choose to do it in ways that are indicative of the person I am and the things I am in to/pay attention to.
