We were lucky to catch up with Hunnie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hunnie, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
At the young age of 15, I started to perform in different cover bands up and down California. My parents have been my biggest supporters since day one. My mother, Kimberly, was actually the person who got my foot in the door for performing. My parents have been there for me every single step of the way. They have always kept me humble and grounded; they also protected me as a woman in the male dominated music scene. At 19, I started my own cover band as the lead singer and my parents had my back every step of the way. My father, Enrique, learned how to run sound for the band and studied it every single day after work while my mother learned how to be a manager of a band. I am forever grateful for their never ending support.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hunnie is an R&B artist based out in Bakersfield, California. At the young age of 15, her humble beginnings consisted of being a background vocalist for various bands and traveling all over California. Soon after starting her own band and becoming the front woman, she took a leap of faith and started recording original music. Her music has caught the attention of radio stations such as Precious 95.7, Rewind 98.1 and Fire 103.9. She is a unique R&B artist who believes in vulnerability in music, which is something that isn’t common in music anymore. Her 2021 breakout single “WGW” featuring fellow artist Krathel has started an unbelievable journey that has just begun. From her vulnerable and sultry EP titled “If I’m Being Honest” to her funky and soulful single titled “Closer,” to her smooth r&b single “Strangers” featuring Noble, and fun r&b single “Funkin” featuring Chuck. Recently, she won two Bakersfield Music Awards for Best Cover Band and Best R&B Single for “Closer.” Hunnie is an artist that is breaking barriers in the R&B scene.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to share my vulnerability and story with others who may relate to it. I have written about my heartbreaks, where people have genuinely related to it. It makes me feel good knowing that my vulnerability allows someone else to be vulnerable.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can just support their local artists by sharing their music, coming out to their shows and buying their merch. It may insignificant to them, but it means the world to the artists. A small gesture can go a long way. I know a lot of my fan base found me through someone sharing my music on social media.
