Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Humble Lyons. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Humble, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The very first time I picked up a camera was only because the individual I enlisted to help me with the photography I needed at the time, wasn’t reliable. I picked up a camera with the intent to hand off the task as soon as I found someone else to do it…I never put the camera down. It quickly became the norm to have a camera by my side. Having the camera so much is essential how I learned photography. It went from being fun to learn to my therapy.
Even with knowing what I know now…I honestly don’t think I would want to speed up the learning process. Everything happened just how it was supposed to. I tend to jump into things with two feet anyway.
I think one of the most essential skills for me was patience. I started experimenting with long exposer landscape photography which requires a lot of patience when taking 20-30 second photos. I took this same practice into learning photoshop and all the other creative and post production skills Ive picked up over the years. The same practice has also saved me a lot of frustrating nights.
The only obstacle in my way of learning more was ME.
Humble, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Humble Lyons. I am a photographer and creative that provides fine art photography services, podcast production (MCXI Studios), fine art print services, marketing services, graphic services, mockup creation, product photography, audio production, creative director and all things creative and media.
I approach photography with the same way I got into photography…with the notion that there are no rules. I like to be as creative as I can be while also having an appreciation for all aspects of visual art. I think the thing that may separate me from others is that I will treat you with the respect as a human first and not as just a client. I want to make sure I provide something you’ll appreciate having for a long time to come.
One of the things I am most proud of is that a high percentage of the people that have worked with mestill use my photo as their profile pictures. Even years later. It’s the small things.
The one thing I do want people to know about my work is even with my “no rule” approach to photography, QUALITY is at the top of my priority list. This applies to the fine art photos, the podcast production, and all the other creative things I produce.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After I made the commitment to take photography seriously….I was shot. I genuine case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. After sitting in the hospital for almost two weeks, I was ordered to rest for 2-3 more weeks at home. After day 4 I was back outside with my camera. I used the extra down time to really get serious on learning photoshop. I returned to the doctor a few weeks later and to his surprise, I bounced back a lot faster than he anticipated. Photography got me through that entire experience a lot easier. I say all that to say, no matter what you are dealt….You can still keep going.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As I’ve grown, my goals and mission have slightly shifted. But one thing that still remains true throughout it all is I want to motivate/inspire positive thoughts and actions within people. I have been exploring podcasting the past few years and beyond anything technical I’ve learned, the things I’ve digested just talking to people have been life changing. It has shifted my perspective, forced me to unlearn, made me look in the mirror, and most importantly it has highlighted how important self awareness is in all of us. The feedback I have gotten from people just listening to the conversations has been fulfilling in itself.
One of the most things I’ve kept with me on this journey is the reminder; “Dreams without goals are just dreams.”
DONT BE AFRAID TO GROW!
