Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Humberto Perez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Humberto, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I started my business while taking an automotive course at my local community college. While learning this trade, many peers talked about becoming business owners and opening up a shop someday. I thought that was a good idea as well and perhaps after becoming skilled, I could do the same thing. While going to school and learning the skills, I would occasionally pick up small jobs where I can either work at my customers house or at my own. It seemed like becoming mobile and using my home as a start kept my overhead and expenses low. It did have its challenges like transporting, tools and equipment or limiting the amount of work in order to be compliant with local regulations but I knew that it was just a matter of time and money until I could find the right location to start something even bigger. However I was able to continue learning in my field of work by continuing to go to school and upgrading my skills by offering even more services related to this industry. I also continued to purchase more tools which allowed me to do more and better work. Learning more of the industry opened up the door to more opportunities and more income. I eventually had enough money saved up to rent a location in the area I desired where I could work comfortably and be close to my vendors and customers as well as my home. From the time I went to school, to the time I had my location, it was a period of approximately 7 years. It has not been easy but has been an amazing learning procedure. Today I offer more services than just automotive itself such as home renovations, transportation services and event marketing.

Humberto, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
About myself, I am currently 32 years old. Based on my reviews, many of my clients say I am a super hard worker, very efficient, great friendly attitude and always professional. I always strive to go above and beyond for my customers for I know they will consider to use my services again. I got into these different industries mainly by having a good source of leads where consumers request me to perform a service under certain categories. These services may be automotive repair paint & upholstery, carpentry, cleaning, event staffing, help moving, furniture assembly, hauling, home renovations, landscaping maintenance & renovation, interior & exterior painting, power washing, and transportation for goods and people. What sets me apart from others, in my opinion, is making trustworthy connections and always willing to fulfill my customers requests and satisfaction. I am most proud of all my tools and equipment. These assets are my bread and butter. Without my equipment I would not be able to do anything. What I would like my potential clients to know is that they can follow my Instagram page ( third_millennium_industries ) where they can see all the different type of work and services I have done in the past.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes. What is now my full time business, used to be my side hustle. Before even starting this side hustle, I was working as a brand ambassador promoting different brands as well as flipping vehicles. However, I felt like the income was not enough. I was still struggling. This was happening a few months before the coronavirus epidemic hit our country. What I did was that I got on youtube and searched for the best top paying apps. One of the bloggers mentioned an app called TaskRabbit. After listening about all the odd jobs I could possibly do, I decided to give it a try. I signed up and created a profile. Slowly but surely I started to get requests for different tasks under different categories. I then realized that this app had so much potential when it came to making money. Not only that it had the flexibility I needed so I could continue working my regular job. Things started to get better with TaskRabbit. Sometimes I would be offered to do gigs that I have never done before and did not even have the proper tools or equipment. Therefore I invested in tools each time I had a new job to do. Also, my inventory with tools and equipment started growing so I had to rent a storage unit because my home was not that big. I then knew that soon I would need a truck as well. These steps to making my side hustle grow was by far one of the most effective decisions I could have taken.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for new clients is TaskRabbit. It has generated the most clients for me. When I do work for them, they usually ask me to come back. I do use other methods like facebook, craigslist, nextdoor and word of mouth.
