Hulu , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

Hulu Amen Ra’s journey is a testament to the power of taking risks and the profound impact of the people we choose to work with. In a bold move, Hulu left the East Coast behind and returned to San Diego, stepping into ownership of The Hidden Spa Wellness Center in Ocean Beach, California. This leap of faith was more than a business decision; it was a synchronicity that aligned perfectly with his passion for wellness and healing.

Before becoming a local San Diego business owner, Hulu was known for promoting wellness through meditation, sound healing and herbalism at the local farmers market in Ocean Beach and local events. Little did he know that just a block away from his market stall, an opportunity awaited that would change his life. On June 6th, 2022, with the financial help of his mother and savings from his previous work, Hulu became the third owner of The Hidden Spa. This decision marked the beginning of a transformative journey.

Taking ownership of the spa was a significant gamble, but Hulu’s vibrant energy and vision for a holistic healing environment quickly began to reshape the business. He invested not just money but also his heart and soul into remodeling and rebranding the spa, creating a space dedicated to full-spectrum healing and self-care.

The past two years have been a rollercoaster ride, marked by economic fluctuations and the challenges brought on by inflation. Despite the ups and downs, Hulu’s commitment to his vision has led to remarkable personal and spiritual growth. The Hidden Spa has become a sanctuary for the San Diego community, offering a place where wellness and holistic healing thrive.

Hulu’s journey underscores the idea that “risk turns into rewards.” His willingness to take a chance on his dreams and his dedication to fostering wellness have not only brought him success but have also made a positive impact on those around him. For those unfamiliar with Hulu Amen Ra, his path to the health and wellness industry is as diverse and dynamic as the man himself. Hulu’s journey began with a degree in Sound Engineering and Audio Production from the Institute of Audio Research in 2007. His passion for healing led him to graduate from the Massage Therapy program at Cortiva Institute in New Jersey in 2014. By 2018, he had trained in sound healing techniques with Soma Energetics in Lyndhurst, NJ, and had already begun his wellness business in 2017.

Hulu’s holistic approach integrates ancient and contemporary healing arts. He is an artist of words, a self-published author of “The Art of Life – Speak, Move, Think, Feel Art” and “The Seed & The Fruit – 4 R’s of Self Healing”. He is also the creator of the Hu Nectar Superfood line of wellness products, which includes bath salts, oil blends, and herbal supplements, initially sold at local farmers markets.

In December 2018, Hulu and his partner moved to California, driven by a vision to raise the vibration of the world through holistic natural remedies and healing arts. His dedication to integrating various disciplines, often not found in traditional spa settings, sets him apart and maximizes well-being for his clients.

What Hulu is most proud of is the team he has built. His powerful energy and passion have attracted like-minded individuals with similar life goals, creating a community-oriented, growth-focused environment. As a leader and teacher, Hulu fosters a family-like atmosphere where each team member brings unique gifts from around the world to help others achieve balance and well-being.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

When Hulu Amen Ra first assumed ownership of The Hidden Spa Wellness Center, he faced an intricate and multifaceted learning curve. The previous owner, a woman from Vietnam with limited English proficiency, trained Hulu in the nuances of the business. Her approach was neither particularly business savvy nor patient, which added layers of complexity to the transition process. Hulu found himself in a delicate position, where the potential for miscommunication was high, and cultural differences could easily lead to misunderstandings.

Despite these challenges, Hulu consciously chose to suppress any instinctive urges to argue, pass judgment, or harbor frustration. A natural American reaction he thought. Instead, he embarked on a profound psychological journey, cultivating a higher level of patience and cultural sensitivity. This required a significant shift in his mental and emotional state, necessitating an elevation of his energy and mindset to maintain a harmonious working relationship.

Hulu’s adjustment was not merely about understanding the business mechanics but also about fostering a deeper appreciation for interpersonal dynamics. He had to recalibrate his communication style, learning to interpret the previous owner’s instructions and intentions with a nuanced perspective. This shift was crucial in navigating the conflicts and misunderstandings that arose, allowing him to achieve the desired outcomes effectively.

By embracing a higher vibration and a more enlightened approach to these interactions, Hulu discovered the importance of being worldly and adaptable. He realized that dealing with people from different cultures required an open heart and a flexible mind, capable of transcending language barriers and cultural norms. This experience enriched Hulu’s understanding of global interconnectedness and the vital role of empathy and patience in fostering successful interpersonal relationships.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

Hulu Amen Ra embarked on his entrepreneurial journey by leveraging a well-paying job to save approximately $26,000. With a keen eye on his future, he had already drafted several business plans over the years. Realizing the need to refine his vision and mission, Hulu revised one of these plans to better align with his aspirations.

He presented this meticulously revised business plan to his mother, who had become somewhat of a financial advisor to him. Initially, Hulu’s search for a business to purchase was focused on wellness products, aiming to highlight his holistic brand. However, during this search, he stumbled upon the listing for The Hidden Spa Wellness Center.

His mother, wholeheartedly believing in his vision and dedication, decided to front him the necessary investment capital to make the purchase. This pivotal moment was a testament to Hulu’s commitment to self-improvement, continuous education, and his ability to present himself effectively to those who could support his goals. This support, coupled with his dedication, allowed him to secure the funds needed to bring his business aspirations to fruition.
