Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hugo Arenas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Hugo, thanks for joining us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
I take working vacations, meaning that I do enjoy and relax, but feel that I have to constantly have my finger on the pulse. This is far from micro-managing, but more of a leadership role which I am devoted to. SO yes, my laptop does vacation with me, so to speak.
My advice for anyone that can’t seem to step away, is to devote just one hour per day wherever your destination may be.

Hugo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been in the entertainment industry, mostly in TV production for 25+ years.
I was born in Cuba and we left to Spain when I was a kid and soon arrived to New Jersey.
Not knowing a word of English, I recall watching plenty of TV, especially news, which was strange for a kid.
School and TV helped me learn the language and as my parents would tell me to go outside and play, I would just point at the TV and tell them that one day I would work there.
Once in college and not knowing the first thing about TV, I became infatuated with Talk Shows. Soon I became and intern in Spanish language talk shows and began to grown within the genre.
Soon I was working in the general market and became passionate about celebrity entertainment news.
Pop Culture became a passion, not work.
Ive had the privilege of working in many markets and grow within the industry.
My experience has garnered several awards, but I’m most grateful for my current role as VP for Television production in which I am free to be very creative and guide other to do the same.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I’m not a believer of coincidence. For me, it’s more of being at the exact place and at the exact moment.
I was on hiatus from a show in Los Angeles and happened to be visiting family in Miami.
I received a random email stating that someone referred me as a bi-lingual producer and they were looking to record 30 short form talk show episodes in two weeks and I would have to travel to Miami. Lucky for us both, I was already in Miami.
Once we started taping, another show was taping in the studio and the CEO saw me and my work and asked if I would be interested in becoming an Executive Producer. I accepted and we started working together and soon became business partners.

Any advice for managing a team?
Creatives have their own individual process, and I encourage the process. I am open to trying new ideas and rarely turn down a suggestion. I encourage the team to sell me on their idea and we go form there. Not everything works out, but we there’s always many more changes.
