We were lucky to catch up with Hsin Ho Yang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hsin Ho, appreciate you joining us today. What was one of the most important lessons you learned in school? Why did that lesson stick with you?
During my time in school, I learned a crucial lesson about the importance of authenticity and originality in creating environments for the stage.
Amid the challenges of interpreting scripts and directorial visions, I often felt the pull to conform to more established styles. However, I discovered that embracing my unique perspective was vital for crafting sets that were not only visually striking but also emotionally resonant. This commitment to authenticity helped me create spaces that truly supported the storytelling, enhancing the overall impact of the performances.
This profound lesson has fundamentally shaped my approach to design and continues to influence my work in the theatre world.
Hsin Ho, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Originally from Taiwan, I am an aspiring set designer with a rich background in theater design and film , now making strides in the film and television industry.
My experience includes roles as an assistant art director on acclaimed series like “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” and “The Walking Dead: Dead City.”
These foundations have equipped me with a profound understanding of space and aesthetics, enhancing my ability to create immersive environments that complement narrative and visual storytelling. Eager to merge traditional design techniques with modern cinematic demands, I am dedicated to crafting sets that captivate audiences and support the artistic vision of every project.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to evoke emotions and provoke thought through my creations. It’s deeply fulfilling to see how my work, whether a set design in a play or a film, can transport audiences into another world, making them feel connected to the story and characters.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by the desire to bridge cultural narratives and innovative design. I aim to create set designs that are not only visually captivating but also culturally resonant and impactful. This mission stems from my background in theatre and diverse cultural experiences, inspiring me to craft environments that enhance storytelling and connect deeply with diverse audiences.
