We were lucky to catch up with Hsiming Wang recently and have shared our conversation below.
HsiMing, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first dollar I earned as a creative came from my work as a freelancer. The pay was decent, but I was too caught up in the experience to think much about the money I made. It was an exciting venture, especially since it was my very first time freelancing. What I learned from this gig is to never doubt your abilities and always ensure you get paid what you’re worth.
Another important lesson I learned is the challenge of balancing creativity with a client’s needs. It all comes down to communication and finding ways to use your vision to persuade the client. I feel like I learned more as a freelancer than I did as a student in school.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey folks, my name is Peter Wang, and I’m a brand and motion designer who just graduated from college. I was born and raised in Taiwan and am currently based in New York City. I’ve been passionate about creative work since I was a kid, spending my free time drawing and developing a unique sense of style.
I was fortunate to be introduced to motion graphics by my mentor in high school, which set me on the path to where I am today. I immediately fell in love with the field, as motion design offers infinite possibilities to interpret ideas and create unique, compelling visuals. This passion led me to apply to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where I found my community in the motion media department.
During my time at SCAD, I had the privilege of leading the student club MOMELove for our department. This experience allowed me to connect with numerous industry creatives throughout my junior and senior years, further fueling my passion for motion design.
After graduation, I moved to New York City and completed an internship during the summer of 2024. One thing I quickly realized was how different working in a professional environment is compared to working in school. I believe everyone should gain real-world experience as soon as possible, as it can be invaluable in jump-starting your career.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe in the power of community. Growth should happen collectively, and building a strong community is something I’ve been passionate about. Currently, my partner and I are planning and designing a platform for motion designers and artists—a space where they can share their work, connect, and grow together. It’s crucial for us to take steps to strengthen our community, as there are so many talented creatives with so much to offer.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am passionate about building a community where we can grow together. Creating a space for like-minded creatives has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Eventually, I would love to establish a studio with my partner and friend, who started this journey with me back at SCAD.
