We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hozana Arceri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hozana below.
Hozana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think success is a term that many people use but few really understand. We define it with numbers so often in our day and age…Instagram followers, business revenue, how many times you were correct in risk, etc. I believe however that true success is defined by the amount of times you failed before reaching your pinnacle point. I’m baseball if you get a hit 3 out of 10 times you are considered successful. You failed 70% of the time yet your failures lead you towards growth or opportunities for change. In my field of filmmaking the failures leads me towards originality in creating. It’s not just something new that I find in the journey but it’s something unique to me. I would say success is the searching and finding of truth to yourself fulfilled.
Hozana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the filmmaking industry fairly recently. I’ve only been shooting and production videos for clients for about 4 years now. For a while I have been heavy in the wedding industry creating wedding films for bride and grooms, but the past year or so I have been burning with a passion for more commercial grade work and film related productions. I’m actually in the process of growing and writing different things in hopes of stepping more into my desired field. I grew up an athlete playing through college and never knew I had creativity with a camera in me. I remember asking for a camera one day for Christmas and loved it when I got it but had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t go to school for it nor did I have any friends that were deep in that field either. What I did have though was a hunger to learn. That learning lead to me finding my wife who is a photographer as well! Long story short we met because I saw some of her work through a mutual friend.
I would say that’s something I’m really proud of…it’s not a knock to those who do go through the college path of filmmaking and photography…it’s just that I had to learn on my own and it came through a true desire to grow. That’s one thing I am always wanting to share with young creatives is that you just have to be willing! There are plenty of talented people, it’s the talented ones that are also always hungry to learn that change the world.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honesty. And that’s not just being honest with a client, it’s often times being honest with yourself. An honest heart says I have much to learn but also says you’ve came a long way. It’s so easy to get big headed when success comes or when you see yourself getting better. It’s the humble that makes the best leaders, but it’s because they value being honest over power.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
In the filmmaking industry you will work a lot with crew members. Most times you will know everyone on set but sometimes you won’t know any. As a director or someone who would lead it’s important to encourage and communicate. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who said they did better work when being criticized. They may be motivated by it but it won’t last. Managing and maintaining a good working environment takes leadership that is willing to shepherd his team. You protect their hearts through encouragement and you lead their direction with communication. It’s known that in a pack of wolves the alpha male leads the pack from behind. This is because it’s able to see everyone and watch their backs as well. It’s goal isn’t to be the first in line or voice in the front. It leads by protection and having eyes to see everything. To lead a team you must be willing to sacrifice for it, because if you really want to succeed it won’t matter what position you come in.
