We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Howdoyoudood a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Howdoyoudood, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage my own social media.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, Howdoyoudood?
I am a Seattle based artist who loves to doodle. I call my works doodles because it takes the pressure off of sitting down and creating something. Not everyone may consider themselves an artist, but anyone can be a doodler. Why don’t you try it yourself and see?
I am inspired by the spooky, spacey and weird. It is rare that I have a doodle without words to inspire me. I am drawn to the fact that a vague phrase can be one person’s mantra and at the same time be another person’s detriment. I believe words are powerful and we must use them wisely.
Outside of creating tattoo commissions, I love to create vinyl prints to stick on totes, shirts, mirrors and whatever else I find at my local thrift stores. I recently created a coloring book too!
I doodle to find peace in my own mind and it is amazing others have been able to find some resonance from my doodles.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Always charge up front for commissions. I had someone ask for a commission and I went ahead and spent hours working on it just for them to back out. Your time and energy is worth them investing in your vision. That being said, keep that money safe in case you want to decide to give an unsatisfied customer a refund.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Don’t overthink yourself into imposter syndrome! I started out posting a doodle a day. Even if it was a total crap doodle I would post it anyway. I got braver and my doodles got better! People love to see progress! And practice makes progress. Be consistent with your practice!
