We were lucky to catch up with Hottub Johny recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Hottub thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The past few years has been full of meaningful projects . When I get involved in a project whether it be my own or a friend/collaborator I dive into it fully. In 2021 I met and started working for my great friend, artist and producer Dog. I first started by taking over on the rest of the guitar work on the album he was working on. We then started working even closer and by the next album we were starting and finishing songs doing the entire process together. Now we have over 3 projects released that we did mostly all together virtually or in the same room. I enjoy working on projects for other people especially when I can really get into the process and share all my ideas. I also have been releasing my own solo projects for several years. In the last 3 years I started to use mostly my own production. It changed the entire way I made songs and projects, in 2022/2023 I released my last 3 projects as a sequence. The order was Anger mgmt demos, Inner-Course, Staycation. These three projects and the names represented what I had been through before, what I was currently going through, and my plans for the near future. For me meaningful projects take a while to manifest whether I am trying to make songs or not.

Hottub , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After having music as a side hobby/passion my entire life I started to take things a little more serious when I started the hottub johny project. At this time I was 20 years old with little music online and I just broke into the general sound that I wanted to make long term. I met some people in Southwest Florida and joined a group called deadlink. I was in college at the time and was making my own music as hottub johny mostly on other peoples beats. I slowly started to learn how to make beats from the start of this project and by the time 2020 came I decided to go fully in on the production side. After working on beats and guitar work for some time I began to have artists use my guitar melody’s or beats. To name a few Dog, Hamilton, Caspr, Marcy Mane, suckerpunk, kuru, belis, and many more great artists!! Some of my favorite producers to work with are trashttown which is a small group I am apart of, casttag, and student27, and Dog!!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ll start by stating I have a very small following across all social media I use…But I have such a cool community, platform to share my art and connect with others! I built the community through working with a ton of other producers, or from people I knew from shows in the past. On Instagram I try to post my best snippets along recent photos from real life activity! This is one of my favorite ways to out content out! I would give advice to try post frequently! I def go a while in between posts because I mostly try to wait until I have a few different clips to show my followers.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Sharing what I create!! Whether it be sending my brothers or best friends what I just sat at the computer and made, releasing a project for everyone to hear, or playing a set to a room full of people. There’s nothing like it!! Also when I randomly find out an artist used my beat is a great surprise.
