We recently connected with Horace Glasper and have shared our conversation below.
Horace, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned my craft by reading about my hero’s like Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. I used to go to the library by my house and sit for hours and days reading . Then finally when my time came to perform I learned from seasoned professionals in the city by watching them nightly. I was never afraid to ask questions or take chances even it meant going to another city in the middle of the night with nothing but my suitcase. I was never afraid to take a chance and bet on myself! I feel like getting involved earlier into institutions like Second City and definitely doing more dramatic plays to increase my chops. The skills that served me best was my foundation being rooted in stand up that valuable tool prepared me for acting, improv, writing and theatre. Myself at times just always going against the grain instead of rolling with the current!

Horace, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the entertainment business at the age of 15 after dropping out of high school. I knew I didn’t want to pursue college or get a regular job so I just followed my gut like I still do today. My goal was just to always follow my dreams I used to talk to my brothers all the time about what I wanted to pursue. I knew that I had a drive and a passion to entertain to do something that my parents could never understand. My upbringing wasn’t perfect but it was worth it. I know what sets me apart from the rest is my will to conquer. Last year I was faced with a traumatic car accident that almost took my life. But god got me above all else I know that more than ever now I’m fortunate it wasn’t my time. Im most proud of being a father and doing more to help the youth. I’m a avid fan of boxing I followed the sport all my life! So now I help volunteer my time at Champs Boxing And Fitness! It’s a great boxing gym that’s been around since 2014! They were very instrumental with helping with my rehab after my accident! I want people to know I never compromised who I am to get where I wanted to go!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to live my dream 24/7 being able to talk with people like Dame Dash Nemma Barnette and the late Charles Weldon! All great minds that gave me advice along the way and helped push my career to new heights I thank them all!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I was getting started into theatre in NYC I was having a tough time finding work. I was working odd jobs just to keep myself afloat and have a temporary place to stay. I remember one day I heard from great stage actor Anthony Chisholm about a place called The Negro Ensemble Theatre Company. And if I was looking for training or work I should go there. Now during this time I was being evicted and living in a hotel in New Jersey. I remember the minute before I walked into the audition room I went to the bathroom cry. My emotions had overtaken me this place was Legendary Denzel Washington, Samuel L Jackson, Laurence Fishburne, Adolph Caesar, Esther Rolle all part of the Alumni! I just keep telling myself we got this and god didn’t bring us this far to fail us now! Without a proper Monologue prepared I was a master at imitating characters. So I chose Eddie Murphy’s coming to America barber shop scene! I walked into the audition green but with promise I took chances and let loose and booked my first play! I ran productions with the company for the next 3 years history made!
