As a photographer and graphic designer, one of the biggest challenges to profitability in our industry is the perception of our work’s value and the prevalence of low-cost competition.
In today’s digital age, everyone has access to high-quality cameras and design software, which has led to an influx of amateur photographers and designers offering their services at a fraction of the price. This saturation in the market drives down prices and makes it difficult for professionals to command fair rates for their expertise and experience.
Moreover, there’s often a misconception among clients that photography and design services are quick and easy tasks that don’t warrant substantial compensation. Many people fail to realize the extensive time, skill, and creativity required to produce truly exceptional work.
To illustrate this challenge, let me share a story: A few years ago, I was approached by a potential client who wanted a series of product photographs for their online store. After discussing their needs and presenting my portfolio, they seemed impressed with my work but were hesitant about my rates. They mentioned they had a friend who was willing to do the same job for a fraction of the cost.
I took the opportunity to explain the value of hiring a professional, emphasizing the quality, expertise, and reliability I bring to the table. I also highlighted how investing in high-quality imagery would ultimately enhance their brand and increase sales. Fortunately, they understood the importance of quality and ended up hiring me for the project.
This story reflects the ongoing struggle many photographers and designers face in educating clients about the true value of our services and combating the undercutting tactics of low-cost competitors. It’s a constant battle to assert our worth in a crowded marketplace while striving to maintain profitability amidst fierce competition and the current state of our world.

Hello! My name is Hope Cantrell, formerly known as Hope Brawley. I’m a photographer and graphic designer with a passion for visual storytelling and creative expression. I currently own and operate my business named Cantrell Creative Studio! My journey into this industry began with a deep-rooted love for art and technology. From a young age, I was captivated by the power of imagery to evoke emotions, convey messages, and inspire change.
I honed my skills through years of dedicated practice, formal education, and real-world experience. I immersed myself in the world of photography, mastering the technical aspects of lighting, composition, and post-processing, while also developing a keen eye for capturing moments that resonate with viewers.
