We were lucky to catch up with Honey Marie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Honey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first clients have always been my friends and family. Early on, I only wanted to just be good enough to do my own makeup but my friends and family thought otherwise. At first it was just “can you fill in my brows?” or “can you put a little eyeshadow on me?” before we went out, then eventually they started paying me to do their makeup without me even asking. My very first time getting paid was when I was asked to do makeup for my friend so she could try out to be a Rams Cheerleader. That same friend also hired me to do makeup for my first photoshoot. It has always been those friends that helped me to build up the confidence to do what I love and share it with others.

Honey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Makeup was something that helped me to be more confident in myself. It eventually became a passion of mine once I found that my skills were also providing other women with that same confidence. As a makeup artist, with each one of my clients I pride myself in enhancing their natural beauty. I’m so proud of where I started, especially being self taught. Even after 7 years in this constantly evolving industry, I still find myself growing as an artist and learning new things.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
When I started, most of my clientele consisted of friends and family. Their trust and confidence in me made me want to perfect my craft and get better. As an artist your work is your best advertisement. When your client’s are happy with your work, they want to share that with their friends and family. A large majority of the clients I have come from recommendations from other clients, Social Media is also very important when growing your clientele, but I love to when new clients come to me based off of recommendations.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
This past year has been very busy for me. Most of my clients usually come to my studio to be serviced, but this year changed that. I went from servicing my clients in my studio to traveling to clients all over the city and eventually out of state. As an artist you always want to be prepared and carry everything you have in studio to your clients but that’s not always physically possible. I’ve had to totally transform my kit to be able to travel to my clients while still providing them that in studio experience where I’m usually more comfortable. It has been scary but also an amazingly rewarding experience for me. In any business, you’re going to run into uncomfortable situations but when you make it through it’s a great feeling,
