We recently connected with Honest Skin and have shared our conversation below.
Honest, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
We absolutely love sharing our story because it’s not just a part of our origin story; it’s what keeps us motivated to keep moving forward. In 2020, we realized that we shared a similar vision and skincare philosophy. The world shut down, and we used that time to come up with a business plan and strategize what we wanted to do in the skincare world. We decided to risk it all and leave our previous positions at a med spa, and open up Honest Skin together in the heart of the pandemic. We weren’t sure what things would look like in our industry moving through the Covid Era, but with a lot of prayer and resilience, we pushed forward to open up our single studio inside a Sola salon suite, just the two of us. We both had no idea the first thing about how to run a business, let alone navigate through a pandemic, but we took those leaps of faith and made it happen. Fast forward three years– we’re now a team of eight powerhouse ladies, and we couldn’t be prouder of our incredible growth. Today, we have our flagship location in Point Loma with four treatment rooms that we are REALLY proud of! Every decision we’ve made so far has had its share of risks, but we always surrender in prayer, trusting that we are stepping out in great faith.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When we left our previous practice where our paths first crossed, we realized we shared a similar epiphany: spotting a gap in our industry that neglects the everyday person trying to fit in their self-care while living life on a San Diego budget. It can feel overwhelming to be left out of this essential self-care service, especially when you realize it’s your body’s largest organ. Many skincare practices have turned into the “Cheesecake Factory” of skincare menus– overwhelming– which can be daunting to newcomers navigating the world of skincare and skin health. We take immense pride in our straightforward menu of three core treatments and targeted add-ons that we believe you can rotate throughout your lifetime to cater best to your skin. We provide personalized and always personally recommended add-ons without breaking the bank.
Over the years, it’s not solely our menu that has fueled our business’s success, but the real and rich relationships we’ve cultivated with our clients. It’s truly an honor to be a part of a client’s life milestones, whether it’s landing a new job, getting ready for their special day, or offering all the skin love to our mamas. It’s the best feeling when we get to say that our clients feel like our own family.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Something we had to unlearn early on is not being too afraid to throw out crazy ideas, try new things, and introduce new products. When you keep this creativity alive in your business, you’ll uncover what resonates and what succeeds.
We recall the creative minds at Public Square sharing how essential it is to generate new ideas daily – nothing is ever too small to share. This practice propels your business forward and encourages others to actively engage in the creative process.
Any advice for managing a team?
As our team has expanded in recent years and with us juggling multiple roles as business owners, we have come to appreciate the value of regular meetings- weekly with leadership and monthly as a team. Establishing a consistent rhythm within our team has been crucial in serving as a unifying force and keeps us aligned in all areas of our practice.
These meetings have been life changing in addressing challenges proactively, rather than allowing them to become a greater issue down the road. They have also played a key role in maintaining our collective motivation as we share ambitious goals. We learned that by regularly sharing our vision on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, we have seen a significant shift in our team’s overall morale.
We also do quarterly team building activities if we hit our quarterly goals. Sometimes we do fun get togethers with our +1’s, or brunches, spa days and even wine and paint days! We find that when we get to celebrate together a team, we all want to push to hit goals as a team as well. On top of these fun activities, we do our best to offer trainings every other month or so to keep our team in the know on all the best in our industry. Whether it be product training, technique trainings, or even just motivational meetings– we love to offer our team fresh takes to keep things new and interesting within our practice.
