We were lucky to catch up with Holly Vinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Holly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Most of my story could really be considered a failure to some people. I was one of those High School Graduates that had no idea what to do next. I found myself at an expensive private institution studying the subjects of Math & Physics. It was fun, I was good at it, and enjoyed it. Then I experienced a serious injury my sophomore year and that experience developed severe depression and anxiety. That hindered my performance at school. I went from an AB student to struggling to just get a passing D. I was failing so poorly that my advisor and TWO Heads of Departments suggested I choose a new major. My GPA was about to drop so far that I would lose my scholarship, so not only did I have to change my major, I had to change schools all together and ended up in my local community college.
I consider this a failure because of the reactions I got from people around me. It was 4 years of my life and nobody understood why I would give up on a prestigious degree. They thought I was too close when in fact I had no choice. I ended up receiving an AS degree in Digital media – again, a controversy, as I could’ve gotten a fancy Bachelor’s degree. But circumstance and choices brought me here. I fell into video editing and post-production during this program and have since tried to make myself a success story. I aspire to be a successful Video Editor and maybe even a Film Editor some day. I’m constantly looking for opportunities to make it happen.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I graduated a couple years ago with an AS Degree in Digital Media. This program gave hands on experience in all sides of Production, Pre-Production, and Post-Production. I had great interest in Post-Production and Video Editing. After graduation I decided to go forward as a Video Editor. I currently have a couple of ongoing positions as an Editor. I edit for a small Youtube gaming channel, StudioVerse. I am also on the Editing Team for Mugglenet and create shorts for their multiple Social Media platforms. I also have a couple of ongoing personal projects including a podcast. Video Editing is something a enjoy so much. I love getting feedback, even criticism, because it gives the opportunity to make the project better or to give me an idea I didn’t think of. I’m always proud when I have a finished product that my employers, my team, and myself are satisfied with.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’ve never really seen myself as artistic or creative. I’ve faced much rejection so I’m always nervous that people feel the same. It’s amazing to hear positive feedback from people because this feedback validates my position as a creative. My employers, my team, and a small audience on my YouTube channel have given so many wonderful comments that give me confidence. I love Video Editing and no matter how discouraged I may feel, I’m always satisfied when I sit back and see a finished product that I feel like I did a good job on.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My whole journey has been a series of setback. when things were going wrong in college, I could’ve given up but I didn’t. That resilience helped me reach the degree program that helped find a new passion.
