We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Holly Lockhoff a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Holly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
At the beginning of 2022, I decided to take the leap and start my own private practice for nutrition counseling. I was working for another private practice at the time and I was not thrilled with my case load. I wanted to be able to see the clients I was passionate about helping. I did not feel ready to take the leap and I did it anyways. A little over a year later, my caseload is full and I love each and every one of the clients I am lucky enough to work with,
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Holly Lockhoff and I am a registered dietitian who specialized in women’s health and sports nutrition. I have a private practice, Holly Lockhoff Nutrition LLC which is based out of Harleysville, PA. I see clients in-person and virtually because I want to be as accessible to my clients as possible. I provide individual nutrition counseling to individuals and couples, and I also provide group talks to local businesses and sports teams. My approach to nutrition is simple and realistic. I focus on helping my clients use real food to nourish their bodies and to help them meet their personal goals. By creating small, bite size goals at each visit, my clients are able to meet their short and long term goals. I really enjoy working with my clients and seeing them achieve their goals!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I spent the first 8 years of my career as a dietitian in the acute-care hospital setting. I truly loved my time at the hospital, the relationships I built and the knowledge I have acquired. That being said, I knew it was not my dream job. The time I spent with each patient was limited (less than 10 minutes) and I felt like my impact was small. I wanted to be able to build relationships with patients and help them when they were ready, not when lying in a hospital bed. Also, the schedule was taxing (weekends, holidays, etc) and not necessarily ideal for having a family. So after much thought, I decided to leave the hospital and work for my own private practice.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
No, the path I have taken. The path I have taken to where I am today is exactly where I am supposed to be. If at one point I want to do something else, then I will pivot. There is no sense in wishing to be in a different field/specialty when you can always change direction!
