We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Holly Fowler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Holly below.
Holly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I got my nutrition coaching certification years ago, but was always intimidated at the thought of building my own virtual practice. Then 2020 hit and I really wanted to help others in the best way I knew how–to spread the message about nutrition. So I hired a business coach who taught me how to build my virtual practice from the ground up. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences, building something from the ground up. A lot of my challenges came from overcoming my own limiting beliefs about becoming a business owner and putting myself out there. However, I am incredibly glad I started with a business coach, so I could learn from someone who has already achieved what I was working toward.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2008 and was in and out of the hospital for the next 5 years. In 2013, I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and decided to start experimenting with my diet. Within a short period of time, I started feeling better–more energy, less inflammation, and fewer trips to the hospital. Friends and family started asking me what I was doing differently because they noticed a stark shift in how I showed up in the world.
Because I got so many questions, I started a blog to house all my answers to what I had done differently with my diet, as a way to help others.
In 2020, with a nutrition coaching certification in tow, I finally committed to building a business out of my blog and start helping people more directly.
I help people have more energy and feel their absolute best in their bodies, through the power of nutrition. Almost everyone I work with has a packed schedule and we work in a way that makes it easy to make simple changes to their diet and lifestyle in a way that works with their busy lives.
Everything we work on is habit-based so that it is more sustainable and lasts long past our time working together.
What makes me different from others is my own experience battling a brutal autoimmune disease. I have been there, I have lived it. I know about enduring painful health struggles, and I bring that empathy into each session with my clients.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
1000% yes. I love what I do and there is always new research coming out about how nutrition impacts the human body. Nutrition has changed my life and I see in all of my clients how much it has changed their lives as well.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
At the start of this year, I was really facing burnout from building my business non-stop for the past 3 years. My business was entirely virtual at the time and I would spend 12 hours in front of my computer screen. Rather than giving up completely, I chose to pivot. I scaled back on the hours spent on the computer, as well as the number of clients I was available to see.
After spending a few months with a limited schedule, I made the decision to cut back on the number of virtual clients I work with and began seeing clients in person for in-home consultations. This was a huge shift from everything I was taught by business coaches running virtual businesses, but I knew it was the best thing for me.
I now have a hybrid model and it has been an amazing pivot for my practice.
