We were lucky to catch up with Holli Royall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Holli, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Bumble and Brim’s mission evolved out of my personal life-long passion for millinery and my son Gabriel’s learning disibilities diagnosis. As a beauty, hair and make up artist and entrepreneur I have always valued being both a business person and a creator. When COVID hit and my clients were unable to attend the events and celebrations that I built my business on, I had to think about life beyond COVID and what else I wanted to do both personally and professionally. Ever since I was a child I have enjoyed and collected hats and dreamed of building a line one day. Stopping over COVID gave me the opportunity to explore this further and when I found myself designing hats with my son Gabriel by my side, it clicked, this was my next chapter. While seeing Gabriel engaged and enjoying the work, I decided to think bigger, beyond just establishing a business, and about working to build a place and community for special needs adults to live harmoniously, Joy Ranch.
Holli, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Bumble and Brim represents the intersection of two aligned missions. The first is to design and manufacture authentic premium-quality hats with a customization experience for discerning clientele. The second is, through building Bumble and Brim, to create and sustain a ranch and community for special needs adults to live and work.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Like many, COVID has a major impact on my life and my business. As a top-ranked hair and make up artist in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, I led a very busy lifestyle and worked constantly. When COVID hit, the market for these services evaporated as events ceased and people were fearful for their health limiting the services I could provide privately in-home. Rather than wallow in this seemingly dire situation, I reflected on my passions, having grown up practicing ballet and having a keen eye for fashion and design, and decided this was the time to focus on those talents as a business. Being a life-long hat aficionado, I decided to apply my talents to millinery and began building the first Bumble and Brim hat line.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes, it was a hobby, passion, part time job designing hats and it very quickly turned into a full time career traveling all over the world!
