We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Holland Cartmill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Holland thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My father was a professional soccer player for Chelsea, as well as a 2 time national champion for Clemson soccer. My mother is an intensive care nurse, and went to school at college of Charleston, where I currently attend school. She then graduated from musc. My parents both taught me to be a hard working individual, and have given me endless support in all areas of my life.

Holland, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I currently attend college of Charleston, and am majoring in English with a convent of creative writing, and a minor in linguistics. I manage social paper company, and help build that business under the guide of my boss Katy Montgomery. I also run my own photography business, (photos Holland), and have built it from the ground up using my knowledge from personal experience in the food industry, retail industry, and managerial experience from my current position at social paper company. I have built a portfolio specifically around nice pictures for businesses, and portraits to capture special occasions! I hope to become a speech pathologist after attending graduate school, and use all of my knowledge from these different areas of my life to open my own practice for children’s speech therapy.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Every day that I attend class, go to work, or do a photoshoot, I am one step closer to success. Success to me, is being happy, being able to give back to my community, and being a good person. In order to achieve all of these things, I must work to accomplish my goals, and stay on the path that god has set me on. Thinking of my goals, and practicing gratitude helps me get up in the morning, and helps keep me on track!

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I have always loved taking “cute pictures”! Whether it was for my brother’s senior pictures, or for my friend’s Instagram, I have very consistently enjoyed being behind the camera. I also have modeled, and continue to do so when an opportunity presents itself to me. My appreciation for capturing special moments, helping others feel confident, and the art of noticing have all contributed to the creation of my own photography business. I learn more with every decision, photo, or edit I make! I truly enjoy photography, and one day when my friend offered to pay me for my time, I said yes! Then my business began to take off from there! Creative freedom, and being in control of every aspect of my business has sparked my entrepreneurial mindset and I truly cannot get enough of this feeling!!
