We were lucky to catch up with Holiday Thompson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Holiday, appreciate you joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
I had to work harder and longer than everyone else to achieve and scale one of the best Tattoo Shops around the triad. It takes discipline, dedication, talent, obsession, communication, and some business skills to reach the highest level I could. We are still growing! My first shop was in the middle of no were and I advertised so much on social media and tattooed any and everything I could to the best of my ability to give someone the art that would last forever.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been tattooing since I was a teenager in Columbia SC. It has always been my passion to tattoo and do art. I hardly ever said no to a tattoo client because I have always tried to do exactly what they wanted in the style they wanted. Sometimes it can be frustrating designing tattoos for so many different types of people with different likes and tastes, but it has never pushed me away from a certain tattoo or cover up. My first shop was in east bend NC I had it for 4 years were I had tattooed atleast 1000 different people per year, from all over the east coast, mostly North and South Carolina. I’am most proud of how far my skill level has came as an artist and also to have the willpower and discipline to keep moving forward in my career and being very successful at it.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
You sell the story, you sell the experience, you sell the art, you sell the conversation and emotion. That’s the keys I used in my marketing and sales of tattooing. A lot of people don’t understand to be one of the best you have to outperform the rest. It’s a daily goal to achieve. If I had any advise for upcoming artist I would tell them to find an artist they really like and enjoy the work they put out and do what it takes to learn from them. Self taught tattoo artist like myself can take years and years to achieve, but it can happen obviously.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Thinking and philosophy would definitely be, The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene are my favorite books for the mind. They definitely have been a big help with my achievements.
