Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hoang Pham. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hoang, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
When I first started my business doing wedding videography, building a portfolio and getting bookings was a challenge. It’s something that prevented me from starting earlier and something I know others struggle with. To build my portfolio I didn’t have much but I filmed a friends wedding and gave it my all. I put everything I had into filming everything and making the best possible wedding film. After putting together the wedding film, I put it on my website and while not having much else aside from that, I just sent it to a planner who was looking for a videographer last minute for a wedding. The planner said the couple loved the film and wanted to hire me but that their budget was low so they only wanted me there for 2 hours. I went above and beyond and with their budget, spent the whole day with them and used that opportunity to make one of my favorite wedding films to this day. That video has gotten me countless bookings and kickstarted my business much farther than I could have ever imagined. They say fake it till you make it and sometimes you just need to put yourself out there and give it your best and see where that takes you.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a photographer/videographer. I have always been behind a camera my whole life capturing and documenting everything. I love reliving events through photos and videos and it is my joy to do that for others as well.
I got into videography, specifically weddings, because I love capturing a couple’s most joyful day and giving them videos that they can remember and relive the moments forever.
I’m not just a videographer, but a friend who strives for each couple to have the best possible wedding day. While my job is to capture the day, I am there alongside them to help with anything else that may come up. I’ve tied ties, mixed drinks, rearranged furniture, driven couples around, and even sifted through video footage to help find the point a lost family heirloom went missing. All while documenting the day in a timeless and genuine way that you can enjoy forever.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing about being a wedding videographer is working with couples. This is what makes this more different than any other type of videography. I have been blessed with working with the most amazing couples and being able to be alongside them capturing these precious moments is truly an unforgettable experience.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
People who aren’t in the photo/video space especially for weddings may not realize how much work goes into the editing. Nowadays there are so many apps that allow you to stitch clips together but what makes my editing style different is I am not just putting together a chronological video with all the clips, but rather telling their story in a way that even someone who doesn’t know them feels connected and engaged watching their wedding film.
