We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hoang Lam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hoang, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The journey of my parents fleeing Vietnam from the clutches of communism is a testament to resilience, hope, and the pursuit of freedom. In the face of political upheaval and uncertainty, they embarked on a perilous journey aboard a small boat, braving the treacherous waters for several days in search of a better life. Their voyage was fraught with challenges and uncertainties, but it was fueled by a burning desire for freedom and the promise of a brighter future.
Their escape took an unexpected turn when the United States military, in an act of compassion and humanity, rescued them at sea. The generosity of the American military brought them to the shores of freedom, and they found themselves in a refugee camp in Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas. This camp, though a temporary haven, represented a profound shift from the turmoil they had left behind.
My birth, is a symbol of newfound hope and possibilities, instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude for the freedoms my parents had sacrificed so much to secure. As I grew older, the realization dawned on me that my mission was clear – to honor the sacrifices of my parents by embracing the educational opportunities afforded by the freedoms of our new home. Driven by the pursuit of knowledge and a deep appreciation for the liberties we enjoy, my mission became synonymous with education, a powerful tool to shape a future defined by the ideals of freedom, opportunity, and the enduring spirit of resilience.

After a 17-year career in engineering, I found myself at a crossroads, yearning for a new challenge and a shift in industry. The winds of change blew unexpectedly when I faced a layoff, prompting me to explore uncharted territories. In a leap of faith, I invested in CMM Financial & Accounting Services, an accounting firm in the heart of Oklahoma City. Little did I know that this venture would not only mark a professional transition but also a transformation of purpose.
As a partner in the accounting firm, the opportunity arose for me to step into the role of CEO. Embracing this leadership position, I was driven by a vision to demystify the complexities of taxes and empower individuals with a deeper understanding of their financial implications. To fulfill this vision, we initiated the offering of free tax strategy and consultations, aiming to provide valuable insights to our clients and the community.
What fills me with immense pride is the incredible team I have had the privilege to work with. Building relationships, both within my team and with our clients, has become a cornerstone of my professional journey. Earning trust through transparent communication and delivering exceptional service has been a guiding principle. As CEO, I am not only leading a business but fostering a community where knowledge, trust, and meaningful connections flourish.

My connection with Josh Walker, my business partner, traces back to the year 2008 when our paths converged in the corporate realm. I vividly remember the setting – a presentation to the CEO and senior management of the company we both called our professional home. Impressed by Josh’s articulate and compelling presentation, I took a moment to convey my admiration as he walked by. Little did I know that this seemingly casual exchange would lay the foundation for a profound professional and personal relationship.
From that moment onward, a bond began to form, transcending the confines of the corporate world. Josh and I transitioned from professional acquaintances to genuine friends, finding common ground not only in matters of work but also in personal conversations. Regular coffee meetings became a staple of our connection, providing a platform for us to delve into both the intricacies of our professional lives and the nuances of our personal journeys.
