We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hippy Mann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hippy below.
Hippy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
That’s a real good question and I definitely went through a “self teaching” phase in the beginning of starting this music making endeavor. I purchased the DAW and slowly made the larger purchases to build my own personal studio, and pretty much pressed every button and turned every knob until I figured out what was where and did what. It hasn’t been easy, and YouTube came in clutch anytime I couldn’t figure out something on my own. Having a critical problem solving skill set gave me a definite advantage and has been the most essential skill in learning how to produce, as well as DJ. My main obstacle believe it or not was having spotty, if any, internet service at home. During those times I learned to teach myself through trial and error.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well if you haven’t heard of Hippy Mann before now, I’ll tell you how I got started. In 2018, my mother sadly passed away, and that put me in a bad spot mentally. I started making and selling beats as a way to keep my mind off of reality and into something positive that would make her proud even though she is no longer with us. She used to call me her little “ hippy man” so I ran with that as my moniker to honor that nickname. I have always been a fan of electronic dance music, and one day it just clicked that being a EDM music producer/ Artist was my true calling. So I slowly moved from beat making to sound design and creating my own style of music. I would describe my music as a combination of Bass music, dubstep, house, trap, and many other genres under the EDM umbrella combined. A very energetic and bouncy feel that is intended on keeping your head nodding and body moving, Hippy Mann is a whole vibe; peace , love, unity, and respect with a dash of rebelliousness that everyone can enjoy.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
That’s an easy question and I am certain any artist would tell the same story. Once you rock a set and the whole crowd is having what looks like the time of their life while screaming out parts of your creation and cheering you on like some kind of hero…that there is a game-changing feeling. Very rewarding. It becomes addictive and you want to re-live that moment over and over.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media may be the most challenging aspect of my whole music career honestly. At first, one assumes that all of their friends would support you and just spread the word to everyone they know, That hasn’t been my case. Short of begging my friends for support, I realized that I was looking at the wrong audience. Once I figured out that I didn’t have the backing that I assumed I would have, I started reaching out by making positive comments and feedback from those doing the same thing I am doing on their social media, sending direct messages to fans of similar artist, and paying for advertising to get my image and music out there for the world to see. I am now getting messages daily, more recognition in my field, and continuing on trying new tactics every week to gain new followers/supporters. I’d say for those just starting to not give up when you do not get the results that you wanted, but rather try a different approach. In time, you will find a way that works better than other ways that you try, and evolve from that success. Don’t give up! And if you are reading this, go follow @iamhippymann on Instagram!
