Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Himanshu Jain. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Himanshu, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
To prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career, several key changes should be made to the education system. One crucial modification would be the incorporation of emotional intelligence and soft skills training. Skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and empathy are essential for success in both personal and professional spheres. Schools should provide students with ample opportunities to develop these competencies through group projects, extracurricular activities, and peer-to-peer interactions. By fostering emotional intelligence, we can help students become more well-rounded individuals who are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world. Additionally, integrating diversity training into the curriculum would cultivate a global perspective, preparing students to work effectively in diverse environments and enhancing their professional capabilities.
Moreover, the education system should place a stronger emphasis on financial literacy and practical life skills. Many students graduate without a basic understanding of personal finance, including budgeting, saving, and investing. Incorporating these topics into the curriculum would empower students to make informed decisions about their finances and prepare them for financial independence. Practical life skills, such as cooking, basic home repairs, and time management, should also be taught to ensure that students are capable of handling everyday challenges.
In my professional experience, I have observed many colleagues struggle with financial decisions related to budgeting and investing. This issue is prevalent among my peers, who often lack the confidence or knowledge to make sound investment choices. As software engineers, we earn competitive salaries, but maximizing this potential requires strong investing skills, which are unattainable without basic financial knowledge and experience. Additionally, as one advances in their career, the ability to communicate effectively and empathize with others becomes increasingly important. I have witnessed situations where the absence of these skills has led to conflicts and misunderstandings. This has underscored the importance of developing emotional intelligence from an early age, as it takes time to cultivate and is crucial for professional growth.
By implementing these changes, we can better prepare students for the challenges and opportunities they will face in their careers and personal lives, ensuring they lead fulfilling and successful lives.
Overall, by emphasizing critical thinking, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, and practical life skills, we can transform the education system to better equip students for a fulfilling life and career. These changes will help students develop the necessary skills and mindset to thrive in an ever-changing world, enabling them to become well-rounded, capable, and resilient individuals.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a seasoned software engineer with over two years of dedicated experience in the dynamic tech ecosystem of the Bay Area, my journey into software engineering began in the 10th grade. The establishment of the Entrepreneurship Club at my high school ignited my passion for technology and innovation. Inspired by the club’s discourse and motivated by my brother’s pursuits in Computer Science, I embarked on a rigorous regimen of daily HTML, CSS, and JavaScript practice sessions after school. During this time, I co-founded EduRevamp, an edTech startup aimed at addressing resource fragmentation within the Indian education sector. Collaborating with industry professionals, students, and governmental bodies, we successfully consolidated internship opportunities, research avenues, and tuition facilities onto a unified platform, culminating in the development and launch of a prototype.
Simultaneously, I actively engaged in the Aerospace Society during high school, participating and excelling in prestigious NASA-sponsored events such as the NASA AMES Design Challenge and the Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition. These endeavors facilitated invaluable cross-cultural collaborations, notably with peers from countries like Pakistan, enriching my global perspective. Inspired by these experiences, I authored my inaugural book, encapsulating insights gleaned from these collaborative ventures. Additionally, my pursuit of academic enrichment led me to secure admission to the Yale Young Global Scholars Program in the 11th grade, further broadening my understanding of collegiate academia, particularly in the United States.
Buoyed by these formative experiences, I pursued a rigorous curriculum in Computer Science at Duke University. Transitioning to life in a foreign country, I grappled with the challenges of independence and cultural assimilation, leveraging interactions with peers facing similar circumstances and seeking guidance from those who had traversed similar paths. Immersing myself in collaborative endeavors, I contributed to pioneering projects at labs such as the Humans and Autonomy Lab and the Big Ideas Lab, spanning domains from healthcare to archaeology. My tenure culminated in the development of groundbreaking applications, including an algorithm amalgamating workout and dietary regimens and an app facilitating ADHD patient management.
To augment my academic insights with real-world exposure, I embarked on a corporate internship journey, commencing with a stint as a software developer at CenturyLink. Here, I honed my skills in web application development and familiarized myself with industry-standard execution frameworks such as Agile and Scrum. Concurrently, I delved into the realm of hackathons and open-source programming, significantly contributing to the tech community through the development of widely adopted VSCode extensions, amassing over 7.3k downloads, and innovative website solutions. Subsequently, I secured a prestigious internship at Facebook Inc. as a Machine Learning engineer, where I spearheaded the development of end-to-end machine learning algorithms, earning acclaim and a full-time offer.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges during my academic tenure, necessitating a transition to online classes and internships. Undeterred by geographical barriers and time zone discrepancies, I displayed unwavering resilience, undertaking emergency travel to the U.S. to fulfill internship obligations. This period of adversity underscored the importance of adaptability and fortitude in pursuing professional aspirations, culminating in a gratifying return offer from Facebook, now Meta.
At Meta, I have spearheaded numerous high-impact projects focused on enhancing user data privacy and accessibility. Embracing a solutions-oriented mindset, I remain steadfastly committed to fostering innovation and driving technological advancements. Beyond my professional endeavors, I am deeply invested in knowledge dissemination and mentorship, leveraging my experiences to contribute to scholarly articles, hackathon initiatives, and speaking engagements aimed at empowering the next generation of tech enthusiasts.
My journey from a humble background in India to the forefront of technological innovation epitomizes the transformative potential of perseverance and lifelong learning. Motivated by a fervent desire to effect positive change, I am resolutely committed to championing innovation and making meaningful contributions to the global tech landscape.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I encountered unprecedented challenges that profoundly tested my resilience and determination. As a student in India aspiring to secure internships and navigate college requirements with U.S.-based institutions, I had to adapt to a 12-hour time difference while working remotely. This experience demanded meticulous time management and unwavering perseverance.
Balancing my college workload while actively searching for internships was particularly demanding. My days began in the evening and extended into the early hours of the morning to align with U.S. time zones. This unconventional schedule required attending online classes, participating in virtual career fairs, and interviewing with companies late at night. One particularly memorable instance was a day when I interviewed for three different companies, starting at 1 AM and finishing around 7 AM. Additionally, there were numerous occasions when I slept for only a few hours before waking up to connect with professionals for referrals or to learn more about companies of interest. Although exhausting, I remained steadfast, knowing that these opportunities were crucial for my career development.
The situation became even more challenging when I secured an internship with Facebook (now Meta) during the peak of the pandemic. With international travel restrictions and rapidly changing regulations, securing an emergency flight from India to the U.S. was fraught with uncertainties. Booking a flight was a monumental task in itself, with constant cancellations and stringent health protocols. After several attempts and much persistence, I managed to secure a last-minute flight that would get me to the U.S. just in time to start my internship.
The journey was arduous, involving multiple layovers, extensive health checks, and navigating through quarantine mandates. Despite the physical and mental exhaustion, I remained focused on the goal ahead. The internship was virtual, so I had to work in isolation and adjust to a new environment while fulfilling my responsibilities. Ultimately, receiving a return offer validated that my hard work had borne fruit.
This period taught me invaluable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude amidst adversity. Navigating these obstacles not only strengthened my resolve but also demonstrated my commitment to professional growth and responsibilities. It reaffirmed my belief that with determination and resourcefulness, one can overcome even the most daunting challenges to achieve their goals. This journey, marked by late-night classes, emergency flights, and the relentless pursuit of opportunities, stands as a testament to my resilience and unwavering dedication to my aspirations.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a team and maintaining high morale are crucial elements of effective leadership, directly influencing both productivity and the well-being of team members. Clear communication stands as a cornerstone in achieving these objectives. Establishing transparent and open lines of communication ensures that all team members are aligned with the organization’s goals, expectations, and any changes that occur. Regular updates and meetings provide structured platforms for disseminating information and for team members to express their ideas, concerns, and feedback. Personally, I find that conducting one-on-one meetings with team members is an invaluable method for staying in touch and understanding their perspectives, thus fostering a sense of connection and inclusivity within the team.
Recognition and reward of achievements are pivotal in sustaining high morale. Timely acknowledgment of both individual and team accomplishments can significantly enhance motivation and reinforce positive behavior. This recognition can manifest in various forms, such as verbal praise, awards, or other incentives that visibly demonstrate appreciation for hard work and dedication. Celebrating successes, irrespective of their scale, fosters a positive work environment where employees feel their contributions are valued and impactful. It’s essential for the leadership to lead by example in recognizing and appreciating the efforts of every individual, thereby reinforcing a sense of belonging and purpose within the organization.
Fostering a culture of growth and development is another critical aspect of effective team management. Providing opportunities for professional development, such as training programs, workshops, and mentorship, not only enhances the skills of team members but also signals the organization’s investment in their long-term career growth. Encouraging a learning environment where team members can embrace new challenges and expand their expertise is essential for keeping them engaged and motivated. Moreover, promoting a healthy work-life balance is crucial. Encouraging regular breaks, offering flexible working hours, and supporting wellness initiatives help prevent burnout and ensure a high level of job satisfaction.
Building strong interpersonal relationships within the team further contributes to maintaining high morale. Taking the time to understand each team member’s strengths, weaknesses, and personal motivations enables more effective delegation of tasks and fosters a sense of trust and camaraderie. Organizing team-building activities and social events provides opportunities for team members to bond outside of the work environment, strengthening their connections and fostering a supportive culture. Personally, I’ve found that organizing social offsites or participating in informal gatherings like happy hours helps create a relaxed atmosphere for team members to interact and understand each other better.
In summary, successful team management and the maintenance of high morale require a multifaceted approach encompassing clear communication, recognition and reward of achievements, fostering growth and development, promoting work-life balance, and building strong interpersonal relationships. By implementing these strategies, leaders can cultivate a positive and productive work environment where team members feel valued, motivated, and committed to achieving collective goals.
