We were lucky to catch up with Hilton Wright II recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hilton, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One project that holds a special place in my heart is the class I recently developed and launched on Studio (https://www.studio.com/hw). The class is all about building your musical ideas into finished songs, and I poured my years of experience and expertise into it.
Throughout the class, viewers follow along with me as I write, record, and produce a brand new song completely from scratch. This process isn’t just about teaching the technical aspects, but also about sharing the emotional journey, the challenges, and the joys of
creating original music. It starts from the very inception of an idea and goes all the way through to writing, producing, and recording the final track.
One of the highlights of the class is the transparency I offer. I provide detailed explanations about every idea, decision, tool, and
technique I employ. It’s like a bird’s eye view into my creative process.
The final song, “You Want It” (https://ffm.to/ywihwj), is now released with Grammy-nominated vocalist JaVonté and has been spotlighted on editorial playlists by Spotify (Fresh Finds R&B) and Apple Music (Day One).
I believe that by the end of the class, viewers will not only have a better understanding of the craft of songwriting and producing but
also a deeper appreciation for the process. This was truly one of the most rewarding projects I’ve worked on.
Hilton, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an award-winning, 6x Billboard #1, Platinum Record Producer and Songwriter. I’ve written and produced hundreds of songs for the biggest artists in the world, like Drake, Mike Posner, Big Sean, Sofia Reyes, Faith Evans, and even the cast of the popular TV show black·ish. Now I’m building Seven15 Labs, a music-centric media company that serves as my creative outlet for collaborations with artists across all genres and mediums.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFTs, in the context of music, are more than just a way to transact. They’ve redefined the idea of digital collectibles, enabling artists to encapsulate moments, emotions, and narratives in a way that wasn’t possible before. By turning music and associated visuals into unique digital collectibles, NFTs ensure that every piece has a distinct value, a rarity. They allow fans to own a piece of history, a fragment of their favorite artist’s journey, which is way more personal than streaming a song. I had the opportunity to work on a unique audio-visual NFT project titled h0m3w0rk (https://async.market/blueprints/6299ca161f3e98af7d976a6f/h0m3w0rk-h0m3w0rk), with six other amazing artists. Each audio layer ties to a visual component, and with countless variations, the result is a dynamic tapestry of over 700 million combinations. This isn’t just music or art; it’s an experience, a journey where every iteration tells a different story.
