Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hillit Wahlberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hillit, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Absolutely. Reflecting on my journey, while I initially embarked on my creative path early after college, it wasn’t until recently that I made the decision to commit fully to being an artist. Although I cherished my time in journalism and media, I do wish I had begun my art career sooner. However, I’m grateful for the experiences that led me to this pivotal moment, and I believe each job I’ve had has contributed something valuable to where I am today.

Hillit, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Following an extensive career journey spanning journalism, media, and later tech, I made a significant shift to prioritize my mental health and happiness. It started with moving to Denver, Colorado, and that big step led me to the realization that other aspects of my life must and can change. I turned my passion for pottery into my new career and started my business, ALL MUDDY, where I create and sell my functional ceramic ware.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I believe it’s essential for me not to set a specific goal but rather to enjoy the journey itself. I tend to feel impatient at times and get overwhelmed with numerous ideas I want to pursue. However, by slowing down and engaging in the process of creating without a clear purpose, I trust that the vision will naturally emerge. Of course, at the end of the day, I wish to sustain myself through my art, but I make sure to make time for experimentation that may not necessarily result in immediate sales.
My motivation stems from the realization that this is it. This is my chosen path, and I am determined to make it work. So far, this mindset has sustained me and has led me to seize opportunities that I’ve been open enough to embrace wholeheartedly.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m probably not the most expert when it comes to promoting myself on social media, but I try my best because I think it’s a valuable tool. For me, the most important rule is to make it 100% yourself. I believe authenticity speaks louder than a polished image, so if you’ve had a bad day – talk about it, and show others what it’s like to do what you do.
Another piece of advice is to pick your niche: what do you want this channel to be? Is it to educate, promote, or share? I strive to create content that I would want to see myself when I scroll on social media.
Lastly, I’ll promote the occasional post if I have a giveaway or an event, but at this point, organic growth means more to me. I want to share my journey with a community that understands, and if that means I’ll grow slower, I’m happy with that. In the future, I might use paid promotions to reach a wider audience, but for now, I know every follower I have on social media is truly interested in what I’m putting out there.
