We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hillary Scrogins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hillary below.
Hi Hillary, thanks for joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
When I think about what a from-scratch start looks like, I would say it involves beefing up the essentials. The frills and fun things that make everything exciting can’t get you anywhere if you don’t have a solid foundation to build upon. Without it, you’re starting off with a disadvantage and you’ll end up working harder to make up for it. Start with the building blocks, and go from there.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve had an interest in makeup for most of my life. I can recall being a little girl and taking makeovers with my friends far more seriously than everyone else. Once I realized makeup artistry was something I could take beyond a fun hobby, I set out to obtain my Facial Specialty license and graduated in 2011, then completed my first official wedding not long after.
I created Ethereal Jax in 2018 after years learning from and working with other professionals in the industry. I wanted to build a business that would grant me both personal and professional freedom. While I started this company to provide makeup services for all special occasions, it’s grown to include professional hair styling, and full body waxing as well.
The most important principal of this brand is to prioritize high quality. Everything from the products we use to the way we schedule our clients is determined by the standards we’ve set for ourselves. We focus on attention to detail, ingredient quality, tried and true methods, efficiency, and of course the overall client experience. No client is left with a service any less than what we would expect for ourselves.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is going to trump every other marketing strategy out there, every time. Each client that sits in your chair is an opportunity to make yourself known to every person they come in contact with, and every person those people contact, and so forth. When you provide a great service, it leaves a lasting impression that people are eager to talk about. We all can think of the restaurant we had to get our friends to check out, or the show we got them hooked on. People trust the word of those close to them, so if you can get someone to sing your praises, that’s invaluable.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I work closely with someone I feel honored to call one of my best friends. Eadon Fore and I met while working on the same wedding, and I can comfortably say we’ve been inseparable ever since. She offers hair styling for Ethereal Jax, and I might be a little bias but I think she’s the best in the city. She upholds everything this company stands for, and keeps me pushing forward as an artist and business owner. Any client that gets to experience us working together sees what a pair we are. I think the professionalism and personality we bring to any setting make the event just that much more enjoyable.
