Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hillary Roy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hillary, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Fashion has ALWAYS been in my D.N.A.! My mother, Emily, was a fashionista and DIVA! She was ALWAYS well dressed. and image was extremely important to her. Growing-up in NJ my sister and I were often dragged to NY to visit what used to be high-end retail stores like Barney’s, Lord & Taylor, B. Altman and several others. Mom believed in purchasing whatever she wanted at whatever cost! As a teenager, who wouldn’t enjoy that?! But, as an adult I became obsessed with the hunt of thrifting. Getting high-end pieces at a low cost. My little hobby soon became my passion and way of honoring my late mom. And, the birth of Emilysjoys, my on-line business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m currently a f/t fashion reseller aka Emilysjoys. I primarily sell sustainable fashion and jewelry or what many would consider “preloved” goods. My journey with reselling began in 2016 on Poshmark, a huge platform for the reselling community. It’s where customers have access to a number of high-end clothing brands, vintage goods, apparel, electronics and a host of other items at lower costs. The resale industry is growing more and more every year. It’s gotten extremely competitive as people young and old see it as a lucrative business or an opportunity to gain additional income. This is why it’s so important to demonstrate strong customer service and build relationships with your clients. This is what sets Emilysjoys apart from other resellers.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
When I started reselling on Poshmark in 2016 I had no thought of making it a full-time career. My desire was simply to create a legacy for my late mom Emily. To honor her and show others a taste of who she was to me as I admired her fashion influence. In 2022, I was laid off from a company I had work for since 2013. To be honest, the lay-off was a relief. I hadn’t enjoyed my career for years and often thought about pursuing reselling full-time but I wasn’t sure if I could handle it financially. Stepping into the unknown is daunting but rewarding. I believe it was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. It enabled me to gain more confidence in my hidden talents and skills.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
As mentioned before, I primarily sell on Poshmark, a reselling platform that’s worldwide. But, the bulk of my new customers have come from scheduled online “live” sales on Instagram. I typically do them 2-3 times per week. Mainly, in the evenings to capture the attention of viewers in Eastern and Pacific time zones. These “live” shows allow me to present my clothing interactively thru a chat feature for 30-60 minutes or more. And, customers are able to claim items and purchase once invoiced.
