We recently connected with Hillary Haymond and have shared our conversation below.
Hillary, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always been someone with an eye for detail and for setting up a space. With many people encouraging me or recruiting me to help them with their own personal homes, I decided I’d make a small business out. It brings me so much joy when I get to see a completed result with my personal touch.
Hillary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I run a very new small business called Curated Aesthetic Home Design. It’s a home decor shop where I thrift unique items that people can purchase directly from me to style their homes with. I tend to specialize in modern, boho, mid century and neutral style decor. I also help stage spaces as an additional service. I’m completely self-taught and put my visual merchandising background to use. My business can be found on Instagram and Facebook.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to force myself to get out of the comparison trap when seeing other businesses succeed in the same field as me. I had to teach myself that my business is my own and unique to me and comparison is a trap that takes up time that could be used towards hustling and grinding your own business. There is no same route or direction every business needs to take.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Honestly, I’m very new to running my own business, but outside of personal savings and being money smart; My business is in thrifting and repurposing, so I find low cost items and refresh and revive those items to be able to have large profit margins when reselling.
