We were lucky to catch up with Hillary Coleman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hillary , thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
At 1991Greenery Homestead, our mission is to cultivate a thriving, sustainable environment by practicing organic methods and promoting self-sufficiency. Through our commitment to organic practices, we prioritize the health and well-being of our land, plants, and animals.
We strive to reduce food waste by implementing a holistic approach. By feeding our three chickens, composting organic waste, and nourishing our work farm comprising over 3000 worms, we harness the power of nature’s cycles to create a closed-loop system. This allows us to minimize waste, enrich the soil, and foster a harmonious relationship with our surroundings.
Central to our mission is the belief that gardening and self-sustainability should be enjoyable and accessible to all. We aim to inspire and educate others by providing practical guidance and demonstrating that cultivating your own food and embracing a sustainable lifestyle is not only rewarding but also fun. Through workshops, educational programs, and community engagement, we empower individuals to discover the joys of gardening and the satisfaction of self-sufficiency.
At 1991Greenery Homestead, we are committed to promoting a sustainable future where people live in harmony with nature. By championing organic practices, minimizing food waste, and spreading the message that gardening and self-sustainability are within everyone’s reach, we aspire to create a resilient and thriving community that nurtures both individuals and the environment.
This mission is important to me because, spreading the message that gardening and self-sustainability are within everyone’s reach is crucial for empowering individuals and communities. Many people feel disconnected from nature and reliant on external systems for their basic needs. By promoting self-sufficiency and encouraging individuals to cultivate their own food, we help them regain a sense of agency and reduce their dependence on industrialized food production and distribution systems. This not only strengthens individual resilience but also reduces the strain on the environment and fosters a more sustainable and localized food system.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2020, I embarked on a journey that would forever change my life. It all began with the creation of 1991greenery, an online houseplant nursery. The joy and fulfillment I found in nurturing and sharing my love for plants with others was undeniable. However, deep down, I knew there was a calling within me that resonated even stronger—the call of the garden and the pursuit of self-sustainability.
Over 10 years, my passion for gardening grew exponentially. I discovered that it was not just about cultivating beautiful plants, but also about understanding the interconnectedness of nature and the profound impact we can have on our environment. With this newfound realization, I made the bold decision in 2023 to transform 1991greenery into a Homestead—a sanctuary dedicated to teaching others about gardening and self-sustainability.
The transition was not without its challenges, but every hurdle was a testament to my unwavering dedication and determination. Through workshops, online resources, and hands-on experiences, I began to guide and inspire others to embrace gardening and create their own sustainable havens, regardless of the size of their spaces. Witnessing the transformation and joy in their eyes as they connected with the earth and reaped the rewards of their efforts became the fuel that propelled me forward.
Looking back, I can confidently say that building 1991greenery Homestead has been a blessing beyond measure. It is not just a business or a passion—it is a calling. The ability to share my love for gardening and foster a sense of self-sufficiency in others fills my heart with boundless pride and fulfillment. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives and the world around us through the simple act of planting seeds and nurturing growth.
1991greenery Homestead has become a haven where individuals come together to learn, to connect, and to cultivate a sustainable future. It is a testament to the power of nature and the transformative effect it can have on our lives. As I continue on this journey, I am filled with excitement and gratitude, knowing that I am living my true purpose and sharing my deepest passion with the world.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that not everyone will support your business, and that is okay! I have to understand that I can not please everyone, nor is it necessary to do so. What truly matters is the connection I have with my loyal customers—the ones who appreciate the experience I’ve created.
I’ve had people bash my company for things I couldn’t control. It’s hurtful, but that’s the name of the game lol.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In March 2020, I was “laid off” of a company I worked for. I had to truly think about if I wanted to enter back into the 9 to 5 life. I then decided to start 1991greenery. July 2020, I opened my online nursery. I have never turned back! There has been nothing but beautiful opportunities and connections since I’ve started this business endeavor. I now work a few days a week at a local urban garden that I LOVE and have been learning so much from my peers. I’ve been connecting with my community. I’ve also been able to teach about what I love to do. It just warms my heart seeing the growth of 1991greenery.
