We recently connected with Hilda Morales and have shared our conversation below.
Hilda , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I used to work for a color line company years ago that had the name Kraze on one of their fantasy hair products. They were very bright and beautiful colorful colors that I loved using on my clients, so that name got stuck in my head. When I had the opportunity of opening my first hair salon I did a little more research on the name and realized that Craze in part is defined as to become wildly excited or insane about something and that’s exactly how I felt about opening my first hair salon. So decided to go with that, I did change the C to a K to make it more attractive and added Colour to make it more fancy and Voilà you get Colour Kraze Hair Studio.
Hilda , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated from cosmetology school almost 20 years ago and honestly if you would have asked me then if this was going to be my career I would have said no. I was always told that being a hairstylist was not a career and more like a hobby but I gave it a try either way because working at an office 9 to 5 was just not for me. I remember walking The first day to my cosmetology school I remember feeling a freedom that I had never felt before, I knew then that that’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life. Everyone there was so different but at the same time was there for the same reason to become talented, artistic, not judge or criticize by their unique passion. Even though it wasn’t easy being a single mom, broke and had just lost my father I knew there was no going back and had to show everyone that I was going to do my best to succeed. I remember the day I graduated my teacher telling me that I was going to be great at whatever I decided to do because she could see the passion right through my eyes. I had the privilege to work with a state board certified hair colorist right after I graduated and learned as much as I could, I also became an educator and got to do hair shows and teach at hair salons and stores, got to travel and meet amazing people. Years later I got the opportunity to buy my first hair salon from a friend, I knew it was a great opportunity specially since I had the experience, clientele and help from my family. I kept educating myself and soon became known for doing amazing hair transformations, I couldn’t keep up with so much clientele that started to hire assistants. We are now known not only in Dallas but in different States for our amazing Hair Transformations we can do in one day! I also just opened a bigger hair salons with more hairstylists, have my own line of lashes and hair extensions and soon will be opening another hair salon this year. Has it been easy? No. I think having passion for the beauty industry is one thing but been able to run a business with so many different personalities and so much responsibility it’s a whole other world. There has been times when I had tried to throw the towel and give up but something in me never let me, I was meant to do this, the passion I have for it won’t let me and now it’s my turn to help the new generation to be their best and know they are not alone.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Professionalism has always been a must for me, I feel like a lot of us that are in the beauty industry forget that the way we look, speak and present ourselves says a lot about our business. Honesty is another main factor, being honest with your clients will give you long term relationship with them and a good reputation. Not everyone can handle honesty but everyone can appreciate it.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Not everyone is rooting for you and that’s ok. Not everyone wants to see you succeed and that’s ok too. Remember why and who you are doing this for because at the end that’s all it matters.
