We recently connected with Hielen Enyew and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Hielen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
The idea for Kelem Photography was born out of a desire for freedom and creativity. At the time, I found myself yearning for an outlet that would allow me to express my artistic vision without the constraints of traditional work structures. I wanted the freedom to capture the world as I saw it, and more importantly, to give others a way to see themselves in a new light.
Photography had always been my passion—it was how I told stories and connected with people. For a while, it remained something I did on the side, but every time I picked up the camera, I felt alive. The freedom it gave me was unmatched. I realized I didn’t just want this to be a hobby; I wanted to make it my life’s work.
What drove me to start Kelem Photography was not just the desire to create, but the belief that I could offer something meaningful. I saw a growing need for personal, authentic storytelling, and I knew that I had the ability to bring that to life. The way I capture moments goes beyond just clicking a shutter—it’s about connecting with people, understanding their stories, and preserving memories that will last a lifetime.
The logic behind starting Kelem Photography was simple: I believed in the power of photography to connect people, to make them feel seen, valued, and understood. I knew I had something unique to offer, and that my approach—grounded in freedom and creativity—would resonate with others. It was this combination of passion, vision, and trust in the process that made me confident that Kelem Photography would succeed.
Hielen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Hielen, the person behind Kelem Photography. I’ve always been drawn to photography—it’s my way of capturing and sharing the beauty I see in everyday life. But it wasn’t until I realized how much I craved the freedom to create on my own terms that I decided to make it a business. That’s how Kelem Photography was born, out of my desire to tell stories through my lens and connect with people in a meaningful way.
At Kelem Photography, I offer more than just photos. I’m all about capturing moments that truly reflect who you are. Whether it’s a couples’ shoot, a maternity session, or celebrating a special event, I make sure the experience is personal and comfortable, so you feel seen and valued. I want you to look at your photos and recognize your true self in them—whether it’s those big, joyful moments or the quiet, intimate ones.
What makes my work different? I focus on the little things that make you, you. My sessions aren’t just about getting the perfect shot—they’re about making you feel confident, beautiful, and understood. And honestly, that’s what I’m most proud of: when clients tell me they feel empowered or seen after a shoot, especially mothers who see a new side of themselves during maternity sessions. It’s such a rewarding feeling to help others embrace their unique beauty.
Kelem Photography is more than just a business for me. It’s my way of connecting with people and giving them something they can cherish forever. So if you’re looking for photos that feel real, authentic, and you, that’s exactly what I’m here for. I’d love to collaborate with you and capture those moments that really matter.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had known earlier about the power of community—connecting with other creatives, learning from their experiences, and supporting each other. Also, having a solid workflow system, like editing presets or client management tools, would’ve saved me a lot of time and stress in the beginning! It’s amazing how much smoother things run when you have the right tools in place.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A big lesson I had to unlearn is that not everyone is meant to be your client, and that’s totally okay. When I first started Kelem Photography, I felt this pressure to say yes to every inquiry and try to be the perfect fit for everyone. But over time, I realized that forcing a connection or trying to meet expectations that don’t align with my vision wasn’t fulfilling—for me or the client.
There was a time when I took on a project that didn’t quite fit my style, and I ended up feeling creatively drained and unsatisfied. It was a wake-up call that helped me see the importance of working with people who resonate with what I do and value my approach. It’s okay to have a specific style or focus because the right clients will appreciate that and choose you for exactly who you are
