We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Herry Kim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Herry, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
As a child, I was mesmerized by the ability of artists to capture the essence of the world around them, to translate their emotions and experiences onto a canvas or into a sculpture. It was like they were opening doors to new worlds, allowing me to see beauty and meaning in the ordinary. I felt a deep yearning to do the same, to express my own unique perspective through art. While I found immense joy in painting, I am always passionate in developing new methodologies to realize my artistic vision. Sculpture, with its ability to give form to emotions and ideas in three dimensions, fascinated me. Media art, with its merging of technology and traditional art forms, opened up a world of possibilities.

Herry, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Herry Kim, and I am an artist in LA. I make paintings, sculptures, and digital sceneries. Through my art, I explore life’s mystery and beauty. I hope to make art that conveys the sentiment of hope and warmth of the future. I think we are in such an interesting time to be alive, with all the technological advances such as blockchain and AI. Blockchain and AI, in particular, have opened up a world of possibilities for me. Blockchain’s decentralized nature aligns with my desire to create art that is accessible and relatable to a global audience. AI, with its ability to generate patterns and insights from vast amounts of data, has introduced new dimensions to my work, allowing me to explore themes of interconnectedness and the evolution of human consciousness. Despite the challenges we face as a society, I believe that humanity is inherently resilient and capable of creating a brighter future. Through my art, I strive to capture this essence of hope, to remind people of the beauty and potential that surrounds us.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
As an artist, I’m always seeking new mediums and platforms to express my creativity. NFTs, with their ability to certify digital ownership and authenticity, presented a compelling opportunity to expand the boundaries of art and reach a global audience. I believe NFTs are not just a fleeting trend but a transformative technology that will revolutionize how we create, own, and interact with digital art. The excitement and hype surrounding NFTs are inevitable in the early stages of any transformative technology. While the current market fluctuations may deter some, I believe it’s crucial to focus on the underlying principles and potential of NFTs. As the technology matures and people gain a deeper understanding of its capabilities, I’m confident that NFTs will establish themselves as a powerful tool for artists, collectors, and enthusiasts alike.
Just as the internet transformed how we access information and connect, NFTs have the potential to bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds of art. I envision a future where physical artworks are enhanced with digital layers, unlocking new dimensions of ownership, authenticity, and engagement. This seamless integration will redefine the art experience, blurring the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist, I’m drawn to the intangible essence of life, the subtle beauty that often goes unnoticed amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday existence. My creative process is a journey of discovery, an attempt to capture these fleeting moments of beauty and preserve them in my art. Creating art is like constructing my own universe, a realm where I can freely express my emotions, ideas, and perceptions of the world. It’s a place where I can transcend the limitations of reality and explore the depths of my imagination.
