We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Herman Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Herman below.
Herman, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Story behind the Mission
I am a survivor! But only because of the heroic work several Mentors and Several people who have performed CPR on me at the right time in the right place. I have a controlled chronic heart disease that has challenged me with 4 cardiac arrests and a stroke. However, with the support of my wife, my son, friends and faith, I have survived it all so far to live a blessed life. When I lost my voice after the stroke and miraculously gained it back, I realized my life’s mission, “to help everyone I meet be better off in some small or large way after they met me, compared to before they met me.” I get up every morning with the intention of fulfilling this mission as a physician executive and healthcare consultant.
Herman, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Once I have my first cardiac arrest, I was eligible to get an implantable defibrillator. This has saved my life no less than 45 times in the first six months of my implantation. It soon became evident that a career as an orthopedic surgeon was not a realistic goal. Therefore, I switched to a career as a healthcare consultant and CMO over the last 18 years. My services as consultant include supporting my clients with strategy, leadership development, Credentialing & Quality support and Executive Coaching. Having served as a CMO and being a physician sets me apart from other consultants who have not actually performed many of the duties they consult on. I am most proud of my compassionate approach to everything I do which translates into excellent customer service and satisfaction.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As stated earlier, when I got life saving sugery that allowed me to get an implantable defibrillator, I had to completely change my career as an orthopedic surgeon, because of the risk of the defibrillator going off while performing surgery. This was very traumatic for me because this was my life’s dream to become a surgeon. I eventually had to identify a new dream and discover how my skills could be valuable in a different setting and profession.
