We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Henry Erdman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Henry below.
Henry, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
In the past several years, or really since the age of streaming began, a growing trend in key art design has been visual reduction. Specifically, the ability to “read” a poster at a small thumbnail size. Gone are the days of intricately designed movie posters. The growing trend has been talent and concept front and center with little-to-no other clutter. While this can provide solutions to marketing problems, it can also restrict potentially better creative outcomes. Really what is happening is the technology (the UI/UX) is creating excessive restrictions for designers. Ultimately this could lead to further homogenization of key art design.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a freelance key art designer and creative director. Key art design is essentially movie and television posters. I started as a junior designer at an entertainment advertising agency and worked my way up to the senior level before going out on my own as a freelancer.
As a freelance art director I concept, design, and execute poster designs for my clients. In addition to key art I also do title design, branding design, and many other graphic design disciplines.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, it’s seeing my work out in public and on display. Working on big film projects can be quite rewarding.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Doing good work and willing to go the extra mile.
