Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Henri Moss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Henri , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The life you want will always come with a road of risks, you can’t take the easy path and expect a dream, you must walk the path that frightens you. The biggest risk I’ve taken thus far was in late May of 2024. I had just walked across the stage to receive my diploma. I was nothing but a fresh eyed, wishful young adult with a yearning for more. I wanted to start getting my scripts seen, to act in beautiful cinematic masterpieces, to grow my brand- but there was something else calling me a bit louder at the time, this far away voice telling me to come find it.
I sold my things, bought a travel pack and ventured abroad. Many people told me to get a job, that, since I’ve finished college I should start focusing on my career. That if I went away, I shouldn’t expect anything when I get back. It’s hard not to get lost in the sea of other peoples expectations, as if, they know you more than you do. The important thing is, to find your own voice, and follow it with all your strength.
I remember that first step on my journey, I had no plans, no idea what to expect, and to top it off I knew no one. I wish I could tell that version of me to not worry as much, and to thank him for feeling that fear and doing it anyway. Little did I know that in those four months, I would go surfing in the Arctic circle, Barter in old bazaars in north Africa, run through fields in the alps, and get lost on trains across Andalusia. That I’d meet friends who’d become family, and most importantly, that I lived by my own hearts course.
The biggest risk I took was jumping into that unknown. I let myself be open to experience, and similar to my career as an artist, you can never see where the road goes. However, I’ll tell you one thing- If you don’t walk down that road, you’ll never know where it goes!
In the end that experience shaped a lot of who I am today. It helped smooth over the grooves of my NOMAD project, and most importantly, filled my mind with stories, wonder, and a curiosity to learn. If you ever have an opportunity to do something that frightens you, a yearning to travel or a will to pursue a creative career, then do yourself a favor, and jump into that unknown.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Henri Moss, an Actor, Writer, and Entrepreneur with the dream of one day starring in a big budget film that I’ve written. I run an independent production company called NOMAD which focuses on spotlighting stories from around the world, from storytellers that wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to share their vision. The goal is to one day have a platform where we can all realize, that we’re really just one and the same, no matter our location, race, sex, job, class, or any other term that classifies us.
My industry is entertainment, and my storytelling tends to follow tropes of adventure, drama, romance, and philosophy. I love to tell stories, it’s the backbone of my soul, and I want to be defined as someone who found stories in multiple mediums, as storytelling is more than just cinema. I’m quite proud of the work NOMAD is producing, with stories hailing from multiple countries, it’s a step in my vision I hope to manifest in the future.
I got into the industry when I came to Los Angeles for university, and started acting in short films and writing scripts for my school. I feel I reached a glass ceiling however, and wanted to venture out of the academic routine they put around creativity. That’s when Keaton Rose and I, founded NOMAD. While I aspire to one day make my brand global, I find that what sets myself apart is this idea of “globalization”. With technology, better than ever before, the world has gotten smaller and I’d like to capitalize on that by emphasizing our unity.
My focus is split in three, as I work towards my dreams. I would say my three pillars of life have always been Acting, Writing, and Travel and I want to combine the three into a project i’m proud of. My dad always quoted ” Follow your North star” when working towards a dream, saying that if you follow it, you’ll always be heading somewhere you want to be. My personal brand is Henri Moss, which centers on my Acting and Scriptwriting, and NOMAD is the foundation for all of what I aspire towards. If I could have listeners take one thing about me to carry on, it would be that “I’m going global, and starting locally.”
My work has been featured in various script competitions, as well as produced on independent websites, that can be accessed by you. My short film “Sea of Emotions” as well as spec scripts can be viewed on my website, which holds links to my projects, as well as NOMAD and the brand. In addition, each day I post a narrative story on my instagram, with the goal of creating a thousand stories in a row, helping me perfect my craft of storytelling.
For those interested in telling stories, of traveling and learning new stories, I would love to hear from you.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Firstly, everyone is creative, the only difference is I do it for a living. Everyday is a chance for creativity, and I think it’s important to remember that. I think that with creativity being your career there are a few pitfalls that maybe non-creative careers might not realize. The first being that you have to be acceptable to rejection. You cannot enter this field and not have a single “NO!” slammed in your face. You have to get used to hearing the word “No” and realizing it’s not personal. Second is that networking, regardless of your creativity, is the job. You have to market yourself at all times, as there are many people trying to do exactly what you do, your job is to tell everyone why it has to be you. Lastly, the amount of loneliness needed to create. At some point, you have to sit with your thoughts, with these ideas and translate them to a medium, but that is a lot of time alone, even if it’s a project that requires hundreds of crew. In this field, you have to get comfortable with being alone. As it’s a lot of time spent in solidarity.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Of course. Some of the best advice I’ve ever received came from books, and most have significantly impacted my own thinking. If I had to pick the top five then I’d choose:
– The Artists Way by Julia Cameron
It helped me realize that creating your art, doesn’t need to be labor, that true creativity is play.
– This is It by Alan Watts
Insightful essays that range from living in the moment, to experiencing new things. Highly recommend anything by Alan Watts, this just so happens to be the book that introduced me to him.
– The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy
Vital lessons anyone in any career should learn about. Definitely the most influential book I have read.
– The Defining Decade by Meg Jay
Anyone in their 20’s who need a little guidance. Get it from this book.
– Greenlights by Mathew McConaughey
Great personal story from an artist I admire. Helps when you can see someone who went down the same road as you.
