We were lucky to catch up with Hennie Roos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Hennie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Wounds are the most common reason for admission into health care facilities. Non-healing wounds impact the quality of life of 8,3 million people in the United States and the management of these wounds has a significant economic impact on health care. The aging population and rising incidence of diabetes and obesity worldwide, combined with the crisis of antibiotic-resistant infections, necessitate urgent research and the development of alternative, less expensive and more efficient wound care therapies.
I believe that I have been successful in developing a less expensive and more effective wound treatment product. Trifectiv Plus Wound & Burn Care can be summarised in one sentence: Effective wound care simplified. Trifectiv provides for more than 50% faster and 70% less expensive woundcare. It addressed the reasons why wounds do not heal in a natural and non-toxic way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I trained as a plastic surgeon. A chance-encounter with a Swiss pharmaceutical owner in 2010 put me on a road of discovery on how to manufacture, in pharmaceutical grade, a little-known molecule that occurs in the white blood cells of mammals, and which is of enormous importance in our physical well-being. This molecule is regarded as our primary immune molecule. Recent medical research describes its incredibly powerful antiseptic effect. It not only is the most powerful germ killer known, but it also kills an even more dangerous offspring of infection, called biofilm, while not affecting our natural and important bacterial growth on and in our bodies, called the biome. Furthermore, there is no resistance in disease-forming bacteria against its use and as if this is not enough, it has extraordinary powerful anti-inflammatory effects. With so many diseases caused and controlled by inflammation, you are starting to see the picture. I needed to get hold of this molecule in pharmaceutical quality and study its effects and potential application in areas of medicine where treatment methods are currently not optimal.
In 2019, Trifectiv Plus Wound & Burn Care and more recently, Trifectiv Plus Surgical Wound Irrigation came about. The effects from its use have been nothing short of miraculous!
The name Trifectiv originated from the products’ ability to control infection, kill biofilm and reduce inflammation. Its dramatic wound healing power stems from its ability to heal in the exact way that white blood cells fulfill this function, but in far higher concentration that is normally possible. See it as a heat-seaking missile directing mass immunity to areas in need. Standard of care antiseptics are not only ineffective in eradicating infection, but they are useless in controlling biofilm and have no anti- inflammatory effect. What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
My original meeting of the pharma owner that introduced me to this technology, quickly developed into an offer to become the Africa sole rights distributor of the company. However, as I delved deeper into the science of the immune molecule and the biotech environment needed to manufacture it, I realized that the Swiss method of manufacture was not going to allow for pharmaceutical purity of the product. An essential element was amiss, and I needed to research ways to overcome this crucial shortcoming. At this stage, I had already committed considerable financial resources towards product analysis, anti-pathogen and other studies on product safety and stability. Then I heard about a Korean group that were working on a different method of manufacture that was more aligned with my thinking. The next 8 years were spent developing a method that was far superior in terms of purity and efficacy than was produced anywhere else in the world. Friends along the way contributed in their own way, e.g. scientific advice, testing of the product, moral support, and minor financial contributions. But there were also personal hardships, pessimism from especially the medical fraternity and instances when I wondered if it was worth the sacrifice. I accepted from the beginning.that the road to success was going to be difficult and I am glad that I persevered.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
The white blood cells, which is a major cell group in blood (together with red blood cells and blood platelets) makes use of enzymes to manufacture the immune molecule, which is a gas and is stored within the cell. When needed, the body calls the WBCs to an area whenever a threat is perceived. Once the WBC’s reach the threat, they envelope the germs or injured cells and neutralize the threat using the immune molecule. Once that is accomplished, the molecule’s main function is to control inflammation, and this eventually completes the healing process.
In the laboratory, we use similar methods like that in the cell. The molecule is made using an IP-protected process which also involves nano-clustering of water molecules to envelope the immune molecule. The manufactured product goes through various processes to potentiate its effect and stabilize it against breakdown. It is finally stored in a glass container, which must also be protected from UV light.
All of this is a complicated process that must be carefully controlled. I had to learn the importance of process control and why ISO-certification and of the importance of regulatory approva. It is critical that the product will conform to the standards needed for human application. The laboratory, where manufacturing happens, is the heart of the business, and it should always be functioning in peak form and monitored closely to ensure that critical outcomes be adhered to.
