We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Henderson Thigpen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Henderson below.
Henderson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I’ve been fortunate to make a living from my creative work, though the journey hasn’t always been easy. I spent 17 years of my career navigating challenges, but because of my deep passion for what I did, I kept moving forward. Without formal training in the industry, I decided to start a publishing company, which turned out to be a pivotal step in earning a living and building my brand. It’s been rewarding in so many ways, and I’ve come to realize that the real money is in publishing.
When STAX closed, I had to pivot and find a new direction to stay in the music industry. That’s when we began working with the Bar-Kays, who produced hits like “Cozy,” “Spellbound,” and “It Ain’t Easy.” These songs, along with “You’re Still My Brother,” came through our publishing company and generated a decent revenue stream.
Looking back, I reflect on what I might have done differently. One key factor would have been access to capital. Having that financial support earlier on could have made a significant difference in where my career stands today.
Henderson, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
OTM Music Group is dedicated to delivering top-notch services with a strong commitment to customer satisfaction since 1992. Our extensive expertise spans over three decades in the music industry, complemented by a noteworthy national and international Stax connection. The visionary behind OTM is the renowned Henderson Thigpen, credited with crafting the 1974 hit song, “Woman To Woman.” Our recent Double Grammy Win, for Written In Their Souls, has kept music alive.
I am still writing songs daily and working on collaborations with many industry professionals. I was recently on the cover of Bluff City Magazine, Issue 20, Volume 5.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One of the most impactful things society can do is support artists directly through their platforms, rather than trying to access their music without proper compensation. When artists struggle financially, it can lead to discouragement and stifle their creativity. They invest so much time and effort into producing great work, and it’s only fair that they are compensated for their contributions. Supporting artists ensures they can continue to create and thrive in their craft.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Often, non-creatives don’t fully understand the journey artists go through. With a better understanding, they might appreciate the process more. Creatives don’t trade time for money in the traditional sense; they keep creating until something clicks. For those who can offer support, it means the world when that support is given. That one song could be the breakthrough that transforms someone’s life.
